  • electrocaïne session #075 – Jason Rault

Mauritius-based DJ and producer, Jason Rault, features on our anniversary podcast and he’s down with some serious grips. With this house & techno oriented podcast, he sets the pace to get you movin’ n groovin’ your day off with some new old gems… so better take off your slippers and let the tunes flow your way.

When, Where and How was this mix recorded?
This mix was recorded on a Sunday afternoon in the comfort of my home in Florida. I used my home setup with 2 CDJ 2000s, 2 Technics turntables and a Xone:92, no effect units or anything crazy, just wanted to share some of my favorite records, old and new.
How will you describe it to us?

It’s a compilation of some of my favorite songs, some of them older, some more recent, some darker and others more melodic. I did not want to restrict myself to one specific genre or style of music. The mix is a good representation of how I like to play live, not sticking to one style of music for an hour, two or more, but instead taking the listener on a journey through different sounds, emotions and atmospheres.

How did you emancipate and carve your way through the Mauritian scene?

I started very young with one of my best friends, Fabrice David, who goes by the name “Ken Zo” today. At the time, I was probably around 14-15yrs old, my first opportunity came at a club named “Shout”, I got to play in the side room (Dark Room) which was focused on Minimal/Techno and Psy-Trance later in the night. I still remember that night very clearly, I was so nervous but at the same time very prepared, I had prepared the entire hour and half ahead of time and had a paper with me with the step by step tracklist for the night, something I soon found out was not very efficient, but overall, the party went well and I was very happy with my performance. More opportunities followed from there and slowly but surely, I started to play more and more around the island.

You’ve played on various venues up to now, what are your highlights?

I definitely have been blessed to have seen so much in the last 10 years or so of pursuing music. Over the last 2-3 years is when things have started to get serious. I was fortunate to have been selected as 1 of the 20 finalists from around the world to be flown out to Ibiza for the burnResidency DJ competition in 2015. I got the opportunity to play in some very beautiful and special settings on a very magical island. In 2015 and 16 I attended Burning Man, which in its self is something very special, I was able to share some of my favorite music on the night of my birthday which was a beautiful moment. Not to forget the magical island of Mauritius, home and where it all began for me. Playing here is always very special, and I feel a sense of responsibility to play to the best of my ability here, so many unforgettable memories, it’s hard to pick. In overall, got to share the decks with some of my favorite artists and idols, my favorite ones so far being “Dubfire“.

Your set seems to be telling a story, is there anything you want the world to know?

There was not necessarily a conscious message I was trying to pass through this set. The idea behind it was really exploring various sounds and emotions that have influenced and had an impact on me throughout my journey so far. The main message is really not being confined to one genre or style, artistic freedom really something that somethings is not so prevalent in DJ sets.

Could you share your music influences with us, internationally / locally?
This is a very hard question to answer, I really have so many influences,

Where, When and How was this mix recorded?

I recorded this mix at the Dusun, our little jungle retreat at the fringe of the Malaysian Berembun Rainforest during the beginning of October. I didn’t want to focus too much on the mix itself, but rather put the selection of tracks into the lime light. The beat matching I save for the parties I felt….
How would you describe it to us?

It’s a musical thing and like Alan Watts said: it’s not a journey in a sense of getting anywhere. Please dance and sing along. It’s a playful mix of goodies.

Nearly 2 months since the release of your new, deep and enchanting Ep ‘diversions 01’, did you approach it with a particular theme or aesthetic in mind?

‘diversions 01’ is indeed meant to be part of a whole series. I felt my music never really fits into one box, because I like to keep the BPM floating. I have much more to say and express. The songs on the ‘diversions 01’ EP definitely speak the same language, but are all genre benders, I feel.

By doing numerous live DJ sets, even with notable artists such as Modeselektor, DJ Vadim, Tokimonsta, and so on, do you think playing live, over the years, has affected your production methods?

We never stop learning and I certainly feel inspired by all the great talents I was able to share the stage with. It doesn’t all go straight into my production skill box. I do feel drawn towards creating a particular live experience and, when I produce, I quite often think of the stage situation as well like ; How would this work in context of my other songs? How can I turn this into a big live version? Is this getting to complicated already and how can I make it more impactful and simplify the structure? How can I keep it playful?

Is there any particular reason you’ve decided to live in heart of the jungle right outside of the Malaysian Berembun rainforest?

Love brought me to Malaysia. I simply followed my heart. This move happened at a time of low inspiration in Europe. I felt I needed to start all over again. In the beginning I didn’t even feel like making music at all, but this changed. My wife’s family actually owns the Dusun resort here in the Malaysian rainforest and we help manage the place. It’s the one and only place in Malaysia I feel like living.

Tell us a bit about The Dusun Sessions and Soundlab Asia Pacific.
Both these projects are collaborations with Goethe-Institut here in the region. Soundlab is a collaboration with BorderMovement too. The Dusun Sessions feature all kinds of artist friends who we toured through Asia and who all spent some of their off days, here, with us in the jungle. We eventually all made music and put all that into one great album. With the SoundLab we were able to focus much more on the talent here in Southeast Asia and together, with our partners of Goethe-Institut and BorderMovement, we brought 15 musicians from 11 different nations all to Malaysia to make music for 10 days.

Where, When and How was this mix recorded?

The mix was recorded few weeks ago on train between Paris and Bordeaux, south-west of France where i freshly moved to. I simply used my laptop and Ableton Live.
How would you relate it to us?

It’s a selection of tracks i’ve been listening to this summer lazying under the Italian sun or some others that i was just feeling at the moment. You’ll hear different styles of music such as French library music, Turkish Funk, Lo-Fi Hip Hop, Jazz, Psychedelic.

What were your first experiences with music in general?

I fell in love with hip hop culture pretty early. One of the first hip hop record i heard was the legendary classic “IAM – L’Ecole du Micro D’Argent” considered as one of the best french rap album ever by many people out there. Then i quickly became fascinated by turntablism, scratching and all  that stuff, and bought my first turntables at 13. Later during High School, i also met House music, especially the New York sound, and started buying and mixing records from Masters At Work or Kerri Chandler. That became my second important love story with music.

What was the first record you bought?

I think it was Michael Jackson’s Dangerous

This set is all about an hour of a broad genre of music!, any particular idea or theme in mind when you’ve been doing it?

I first wanted to give a “summer/sunny” colour to that mix, maybe we can feel it in the first minutes. But it finally came like a deep journey through my musical universe melting different atmospheres.

You’ve produced several tracks, each of em’ as good as the other. Since when you’re in beat-making?
Thank You! Production is quite “recent” to me actually, I was mainly into dj’ing before. I really decided to start creating my own beats back in 2010 especially right after I discovered Flying Lotus’s Cosmogramma LP. That record totally blew my mind, it sounded so new and different from other stuffs i was listening. I was impressed how Jazz, electronic and hip hop were matching so perfectly to give birth to those unique beats from another dimension. That whole Los Angeles beat scene is amazing i have to say. Of course I can’t forget cats like J Dilla, Madlib, Stoupe or Mr.Oizo who both gave me huge desire to play with samples too.

Which music equipment/gear do you use?

Well it’s quite basic, the beats that you heard were made with Ableton Live 9 and an AKAI MPK Mini Keyboard.

You’ve recently put ideas of spirituality in your music, is there anything that you want the world to know?
Love you each others right fuckin now! Haha. But that’s not really the main idea through my music for the moment. I just make beats for my own fun and pleasure first and sometimes I share them with the world. I’m also highly influenced by spiritual Jazz artists like Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders or Sun Ra. I really love their universe and the magical atmosphere emerging from their music.
