  • electrocaïne session #070 – Mori Ra

10 years ago, we started electrocaïne and it’s been a helluva ride. 2016 has been kicking it so far and we continue the rah-tivities in full force with podcast #070 from none other than cosmic power, Mori Ra of Japan. Surf into a dreamy synth-pop which meets psychedelic disco and 80s music wave from his galaxy of yet undiscovered gems. Perfect for summer and to kick off our anniversary series of podcasts flowing your way. Definitely showing why he is one to watch this year.
Bonus Giveaway: Liquid Pegasus – Tendency’s (Mori Ra Purmooon remix) to add to your crate.
How was this mix recorded, when and where?

All the mixing and editing were recorded in my home studio.
For mixing, 2 Technics turntables and an UREI1620 original music mixer were used. It was then recorded via a 24ch analog console of sound craft in Protools 24/MIX system along with a Mac G4 ios9.2. My equipment are just old but all the specs are all professional.
I have recorded this mix on Saturday the 5th of December 2015.
How will you describe it to us?

With my recording engineer experience, everything from recording to mastering were done on my own. This mix consists of my favorite old and new tracks. In particular, taking note of a mix between soundscapes and the track. It’s a mix that’s made for both dancing and listening.

Tell us a bit more about your musical background, do you play any instruments?

Yes, I can play the drums. When I was young, I was playing in an experimental rock band. Like This Heat! My all time favorite bands are This Heat and Dinosaur Jr. My favorite drummers are Charles Hayward and J Mascis.

Which are the 5 Japanese records that inspired you the most?

How, when and where was this mix recorded?

I’ve recorded this mix the 12th of june, it was at home. I’ve taken a bunch of vinyls that I wanted to listen more particularly, some new stuff I’ve just get in, and some old ones I’ve forgotten in my boxes. Find an order, put the recorder on, one take, 1h and 20 minutes later that was in the box.
How will you describe it to us?

This mix is a trip, I like travels, especially in music, from space to earth to space. I’m always switching genders, between the dark and the light, trying to keep an hypnotic but groovy rhythm. I’m use to categorize it as “Banana Music” but Afro/Cosmic is more conventional to definite this style.
Can you tell us a bit more how ‘Macadam Mambo Djs’ came about ?

“Macadam Mambo Dj’s” is Guillaume des Bois and myself (Sacha Mambo). We started Macadam Mambo as a DJ collective in late 2008 (it became a proper label in 2012). For all this years it was simpler to present us as Macadam Mambo Dj’s in parties when we are playing together, than put all our names and alias. We’ve finalised to make it official by releasing our first LP of edits “Ultima Sensazione” last february.

Best thing to happen in 2015 ?

I would definitely say the Camp Cosmic festival on the Gotland Island in Sweden during the last week-end of july. It’s a big hang out organized by Albion Venables, between artists/diggers/friends/music lovers from different places in the world, 4 days into the wild of the nature, listening the best music you can imagine in a total hippy spirit. Just hope that the weather will be with us.

For Macadam Mambo I’m preparing the forthcoming releases : an introducing LP of Andrea Noce, an Italian artist based in Berlin who is doing absolutely beautiful music, a new EP of Edits by famous japanese digger Mori Ra, and a mini-LP by The Pilotwings, young crazy good guys from my city Lyon. Tell us more about this mix
I mixed it in my home studio using Sony Acid Pro. It’s overlooking the most interesting releases (in my opinion) from 2014 in the so called ‘Deep Dubstep’ and unusual Bass Music styles. I made a few Techno and Drum’n’Bass podcasts last year, so here comes 140BPM.
Tell us more about yourself, where do you come from, what are your influences, how did you start making music?
My name is Stanislav. I’m a producer and DJ from St.Petersburg, Russia. Dissident and Kontext are my production names. The first alias is for underground Drum’n’Bass and 170BPM electronics, whereas the second one Kontext, is dedicated to the wider spectrum of electronic music beyond Jungle.
Sometimes I work for movies and with hip-hop bands as a beat-text-maker. I started in 1998 and I have a huge discography. So if you are interested to know more try to google it ;)
Also, I own a small label called Opposide Records. Its purpose is to provide the outlet for Drum&Bass music in its most expressive and experimental forms.

What tune defined 2014 for you?
    Percussions – Sext

If you had to give us a tour of Saint-Petersburg’s upcoming producers/DJs, where would you start?
If we talk about newcomers, first of all let’s highlight Torn – a rising star in the post-dnb 170BPM electronics. His sound is always punchy and minimalistic, nothing extra, just the essence. Another one is the new project of Oak (Microfunk Crew) and his mate Tony Tek. They produce a very subtle techno, the one you can listen and dance to.
    Favourite piece of equipement?
It’s still my first synthesizer ‘Polyvoks’. The model was manufactured in early 80s in USSR . This dusty analog monster is still with me. As it’s very old – the sound is always kinda morphing and surprising. That is what’s missing to me in modern software and hardware tools.
You have just released your album, tell us more about it.
‘Dispersal’ is my 3rd full-length album under the Kontext alias. For me it sounds like a mixture of first two works. With all that bleak cinematic soundscapes combining with glitchy elements and funky beats. I’m very happy with this dub salad. Big up to Absys Records!

What are the plans for 2015?
It’s gonna be a year of Dissident for me. I signed a lot of tunes last year, looking forward to all these releases in 2015. I’m planning to work hard in the studio and travel for some cool gigs around the globe.

Tell us more about the free give away track.
There was a period when I played a lot of live sessions with different jazz musicians in studio, like in 2008-2009 when I worked with Bristol’s Immerse Records.
While looking for something for the give away track, I unexpectedly found one of these sessions; I’m glad to introduce Igor Shilov on t...

Cool Swiss beats feature in this perfectly colourful hip-hop and rap mix by the friendly DJ Green Giant, featuring anyone from his Swiss mate Sebb Bash to Chief, Madlib, Shady, Prince and his brother, GR!
When and where was this mix recorded ?
I recorded it in late october 2014 in my bedroom which is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.
How will you describe it to us?
It’s basically a mix of different things that I feel right now. Some new rap tunes, some beats and some old tracks that I used as interludes. I tried to add a lot of swiss artists because I truly believe that the beatmaking scene is amazing for such a small country. Especially in the french speaking part of Switzerland.
Tell us a bit more about life in the alps (besides winter and sports)
Cheese, chocolate, banks, watches… and beats
Any particular Swiss beatmakers/producers we should watch out for besides “CHIEF” ?
Sebb Bash is definitely the man to watch out for. In my opinion he’s probably the most underrated producer in Europe even though he has worked with cats like Jadakiss, Tony Yayo, Alchemist, Big Noyd, Prodigy or the late Big L to name a few. He’s the most creative and talented guy I know. He’s been doing beats in his basement for ages and most of the time, we are only a few chosen ones to be granted the privilege of listening to them. When I started recording this Electrocaine podcast, I asked him for an exclusive beat that I could use. He sent me not one but 67 tracks and told me “it’s too hard to choose, do it yourself”. Beside him, you can follow the beatmakers that I played in my mix: Chief, Deheb (even if he’s french), Fleo, Shady, FlexFab, Hook (who co-produced Muthoni’s track) and of course my brother GR!
Name a long time favorite record of yours & one that never leaves your dj bag?
It’s a tough question, there are so many. I would say “Uptown – Dope On Plastic” which was released in 1989 on Tommy Boy records. That’s one of my favorite rap track of all time. It has never been released on an album and the original 12-inch is hard to find. I think that’s probably the one record I would never sell.  The record that never leaves my DJ bag  (by the time I was still using DJ bags) could be Ante Up by M.O.P.  I know that’s an easy choice, but that’s the kind of records you can play anywhere in front of any crowd. Definitely a lifesaver when you’re sweating behind your turntables. And also, I was a huge M.O.P. fan when I was younger so this answer makes sense.
