For our "Sort-Of" Summer Special, we set ourselves a little literary homework and went off to research the giants our favourite subgenres stand on the shoulders of. Emma focused on paranormal romance and couldn't resist creating a Venn diagram, and Jess went the whole hog, digging back into romance in fantasy as far as The Iliad!
*During the discussion of this, Emma mentions the a-sexual coding of the vampires, but would like to add that this is not the reason she doesn't feel they should be classed as romances.
It's the final episode of Season Six and we're talking about Bride by Ali Hazelwood. You can visit the author's website here for details about her other work.
There will be some small plot point spoilers in our discussion of the book but we always try to warn you. As always with romance, we know there is going to be a HEA and our episodes aim to share the joy we take in following the characters on their journey towards it and prompt conversations exploring why SFF romance is so fantastic.
In this episode, Emma specifically discusses the conflict between the couple at the end. This begins at the 57 minute mark and concludes at the 64 minute mark, if you'd like to skip it!
These are adult romances, so warning for explicit language and please check content/trigger warnings for the book before listening if there are topics that you might find upsetting to hear about.
