 What is the relationship between the heart of John the Baptist’s ministry and the coming of
Jesus and His ministry? (Luke 1:17)
 Who were the Fathers?
 The fathers were those spiritual, national, and family leaders!! (Biological and
spiritual.)
 They were respected and revered and followed.
 Strong, courageous, leaders. (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, Prophets, Priests,
Kings, Deborah, Esther, Mary, Priscilla)
 Return …. Implies departure, distance
Heart …. Your presence, counsel, approval of who I am, affirmation (believe in you …. am for
you!) …. Painful to live without affirmation. Something stays broken!
 The attitude of the religious leadership was rooted in outward performance …. Self Righteous
attitudes …. Legalism ….Dead inner man (“father is the devil” – John 8:44)
 Distance and brokenness had developed …. Their hearts had drifted away from each
other.
 They embraced religion (self-effort and promotion) but had lost intimacy with their
Father.
 When that happens, sin and hardness of heart develops.
 What attitudes cause the Fathers’ heart to distance themselves from the children?
 Disconnection of interest …. Substitute work, own activities.
 Failure to Affirm their value (allow own standard of success to become the measure
by which we judge their value)

 Of a condition that controls and defines our life and ability to enjoy it (loss of control,
independence).
 Recognize The Source
 Our un-renewed mind. (tendency to believe lies)
 A spiritual agent under the influence of the evil one!

 Resist!
 Can’t be passive. Declare war on fear! Be ruthless. Interrupt thought patterns. This
enemy is deceptive and destructive!!
 The power of telling yourself the Truth! (John 8:31, 32; Hebrews 4:12)
 Enlist Reinforcements
 You need ground AND air support to defeat this enemy!
 Come into light!
 Connect with trusted warriors who will walk with you and intercede for you!

A HOUSE OF MERCY AND FORGIVENESS

2 CHRONICLES 7:14; HEBREWS 10:15-22; COLOSSIANS 3:12-14
 How You Forgive Determines How You Live.

 The Poison Of Unforgiveness (the offense may be against you or someone or something dear to you)
 If we refuse or neglect to forgive…
 Can’t embrace our own forgiveness (and forgiveness of yourself is just as required as
forgiving others).
 Can’t get our faith to work (Mark 11:25).
 What Forgiveness IS
 A decision, not a feeling.
 A reinforced decision. (Matthew 18:21, 22)
 A release from my striving (prison) to make someone pay. (Romans 12:17-21)
 A decision made for His sake, focusing on Him.
 A decision to trust God with how you are dealt with.
 What Forgiveness Is NOT
 Ignoring the offense and hurt.
 A “pass” from accountability for hurtful actions.
 Trying to forget the offense.
 Hurt does not usually “disappear” when we first forgive.
 Does not necessarily require continued association.
 The Release of the curse through blessing!

 Expressing our thanksgiving and praise through singing is commanded and demonstrated!

 Jesus sang praises in corporate worship!! (Hebrews 2:11, 12)
 The Church is to sing praises together in worship!

 Hymns – inspired songs that are true to Scripture and the character of the Lord and
recognized over time by God’s people!
 Spiritual Songs – songs born of and affirmed by the Holy Spirit that honor the Lord and

 It connects you with the heart and blessing of God because Trust is
developed mightily in pain and disappointment (Proverbs 3:5-7)
 It is embodied in Holy Communion and released in its observance! Jesus
desires it, directs it, and His tangible and intangible covenant benefits are
expressed through the intimacy of faithful observance of His table.
