In the discourse for this week "Shuva Yisrael.." the Alter Rebbe asks the following question: 

Q: How can the world still continue to exist on Shabbos if Hashem rests from all creative activity? 

A: During the 6 days of the week, Hashem creates all of existence through His 'Speech' ("...Vayehi Or" the etc.) on the 7th day, Hashem creates existence through his 'Thought'. So in essence, He is creating the world, albeit at an elevated state.
