Shame is often place side-by-side with guilt, as if the two are the same or come as a pair: “shame and guilt.” However they are very different emotions, arising from very different emotion systems, with very different motivations. In this video, Dr Stan Steindl explores the differences, shame having a threat protection motivation arising from the threat system, and guilt having a caring motivation arising from the soothing-affiliative system. Important from the perspective of the compassionate mind, with differentiating shame from guilt helpful for finding the most effective ways to work with each of them.
