Jesus’ parables about prayer go straight to our heart, laying bare the lie that wounds us at the center of our being. We suspect God can’t be counted on. He doesn’t hear or care about our needs. He may in fact be asleep. Our passages, Luke 11:1-13 and Genesis 18:20-33 are corrective lenses for us. They show us that through prayer we practice trust in a trustworthy God, and what’s more, that trustworthy God turns around and entrusts us with the work he’s doing in the world, to provide and heal, and ultimately to redeem all things. It is the trust built in prayer that sustains us even in moments of God’s silence, when we struggle with his apparent neglect and inaction. Deacon Lisa Elmers teaches from Luke 11:1-13 and Genesis 18:20-33.
