Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015, Australia’s David Graham was one of the game’s greatest golfers, emulating Ben Hogan by winning majors at Oakland Hills (1979 PGA Championship) and at storied Merion Golf Club (1981 US Open).
His win at Merion is notable by his imperious play during the final round where he hit every green in regulation, overturning a 3 stroke deficit to win by 3, in shooting a 67 and earning the praise of Hogan himself, who called to offer his congratulations.
Graham was the first Australian to win the US Open. He won 37 times as a professional, and most notably, he won on six continents, a record only shared by Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Justin Rose (winner of the 2013 US Open at Merion GC) and David Graham’s great friend and mentor, Gary Player.
This interview was recorded in March 2020, as Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic.
The interviewer is Shane O’Donoghue, who spoke to David Graham by phone from his Dallas home.
