On this episode, one of the SHAPE Shorts founders, Professor Tony Pitucco, walks you through a fun exercise that will help you understand how your early beliefs can make or break you and how education has the power to shape and change those beliefs when taught in a creative way.

  • Education in Rural America

Help us welcome Allen Rogers, Superintendent, Principal and School Resource Officer for Picacho Elementary School District in Arizona!

The word passion only scrapes the surface of explaining the way Allen has shown up in and for his career, students, faculty, and staff over his career. On this episode, we will discuss what it takes to run a successful school district in a very rural area of Arizona.

You will hear this common theme: It's all about the students.

    Who agrees?

  • Culture Isn't Gray

Like so many things we do in education, we teach them as cold and dry. We talk about a culture defined as A, B, C, or D, then we try to fit cultures into it. We never give them life. And I have to say, I look at some of the students and I understand what they're thinking... BORING. Culture shouldn't be taught as assembly-line education. Culture should be fascinating!

  • The Gray Area of Words

The topic of today is language. How do we use words? How are they used in the public? How are they used by politicians? We see words like "justice" thrown around every day. But what does it mean? How is it used? Now I'm not going to go into definitions and long-term philosophical debates. The point of this is to say are we using these words cheaply? If "justice" is different for everyone and has no objective meaning, then it's a meaningless term. When we use words and we don't know what they mean, we're lying to ourselves and we're lying to everyone around us.

  • Mathy Cathy

This may be our funniest episode yet. Today we have Calculusious AKA "Mathy Cathy". All jokes aside... this is Jenny Shawley and she is a high school math teacher in Western Pennsylvania. She teaches Algebra and AP Calculus. Two and a half years ago she made a math-related Tiktok to get her students excited for a new unit in calculus. They loved it so much, they convinced her to create a math meme account on Instagram and Tiktok. Since then she has created a math help Discord Server, where volunteer tutors answer questions that range from pre-algebra to college-level math courses, and a Youtube channel where she teaches calculus lessons. Jenny's biggest inspiration has and always will be her students. Her goal is to help students around the world not only understand but enjoy and appreciate mathematics. Take a listen to learn how she got her name and how her students inspired her along the way.

  • The Cookie Lecture

Having taught in both the humanities and the sciences areas at the college, I had several classes in many disciplines. I found it very interesting that if I had done my job correctly, my students really wouldn't know who I was by the end of the semester. Professors bring ideas to students, and then students have to decide how they feel about those ideas. Is this something they believe is credible or incredible? Is this something that is worthy or unworthy? Whatever has gone on in my classes over the semester, the ideas and concepts that were covered meant something to all of the students. Even if they rejected the idea, that is significant. And that's as close as I can get to who I am, and if I've done my job correctly, you'll not know how many cookies I ate today.

  • The Aristotle Walk

How do you keep philosophy interesting to non-[philosophy majors? Many professors find this challenging because it is commonly regarded as boring and not modern. There is also a large disconnect today between psychology and many of the science disciplines despite their close origins. Listen in as Tony explains his “Aristotle Walk” in which he helped demonstrate the impact of Aristotle’s teachings and ideas on the physical sciences and offer students an alternative perspective on their everyday interactions with nature.
