Seven years ago, the former Sheriff of Lucas County, Ohio, John Tharp, launched a progressive drug and alcohol abuse program. It lets those with substance use disorders seek treatment, as opposed to being arrested or receiving jail time. 

The Drug Abuse Response Team, or DART, raises awareness about the dangers associated with heroin and other drug use and works to stop overdose deaths in the heavily impacted county. The DART model has been used in many different counties across the nation. We’re honored to speak with Lt. Steve Rogers and D/S Dennis Whaley to discuss the successful program.

The opioid crisis has not spared any part of the United States, but according to a study co-authored by today’s guest, there are regions where fatal opioid overdoses are more likely. 

Dr. Diego Cuadros is the director of the University of Cincinnati’s Health Geography and Disease Modeling Laboratory. His study found that across the United States, there are more than two dozen hotspots for opioid overdose deaths and that there is a profound connection between opioid-related deaths and mental distress. 

We hope that Dr. Cuadros will shine some light on what exactly is happening around the country.

It’s often said that addiction does not discriminate. People from all walks of life may turn to drugs for one reason or another, even those we see on  TV. 

Today our guest is Keith Mills, a retired Sports broadcaster in Baltimore whose illustrious career spanned several decades. In the early 2000s, Mills was arrested for stealing prescription pain medication. This incident cost his job at TV Station WMAR. Mills entered treatment and reestablished himself in the Baltimore news scene by taking a job at WBAL, which he retired from in 2019. We’re glad to have him as a guest today to share his story and strength with us.
