Mental health struggles are sometimes referred to as invisible, because people on the outside may not know what you are experiencing. The same is true for certain chronic illnesses like endometriosis. The fact that people might not see your symptoms can lead to dismissal from healthcare providers and stigma. 

Tracy Dimond is a poet, literary artist, and library events coordinator in Baltimore. She writes on her blog, which we’ll link to in the show notes, about living with endometriosis and searching for quality care. Today we’re talking to Tracy about how she sees the intersection of chronic illness and mental health.

In recovery, we have the opportunity to turn our lives around. Our guest today is an incredible example of that. Matt Bell is the co-founder and CEO of Midwest Recovery Center in Toledo, Ohio - one of the 17 Amatus Recovery Centers across the country. Before getting clean in October of 2015, Matt sought treatment for drug addiction 28 times. He finally surrendered, got clean, and started the non-profit Team Recovery with his best friend Josh Dressel.

During active addiction, our relationships with others are a part of our lives that suffers most. In many cases, we don’t mend those relationships immediately, sometimes it takes years. But in recovery, we also build new meaningful relationships with those in our recovery network, and with friends who are supportive of our sobriety. 

Relationships in recovery is the topic of our show today, and our guest is Yulia Sandler. Yulia has been in recovery for more than 10 years and works as an administrative assistant at the Mercy Medical Center Hospital in Baltimore.

Today on SHARE, we’re very lucky to speak to the one, the only, Dick Beardsley. Dick was a professional runner until 1988, and frankly, has too many accomplishments to name them all. But among them is that Dick holds the Guinness World record for finishing with a personal best in 13 consecutive Marathons. 

In 1989, Dick suffered a brutal accident on his dairy farm, which lead him into an addiction to painkillers, and suffering a series of physical, emotional, and spiritual bottoms until he finally got clean in 1997. 

Since Dick has been a motivational speaker and an author among many other accolades, and we’re thrilled to have him as a guest.

We’re very lucky to have Ben Higgins from Season 20 of The Bachelor as our guest today. This year Ben released his first book, entitled “Alone in Plain Sight: Searching for Connection When You're Seen But Not Known.” 

Ben struggled with addiction to painkillers for four years, but he has now been sober for nine. In addition to being a reality TV persona and author, Ben co-founded Generous International, a for-purpose company dedicated to contributing profits to social issues around the world. He co-hosts the “Almost Famous” podcast, and is a restaurateur, opening two restaurants in 2018 and 2019.  

Ben believes, as do we at SHARE, that the most impactful way to break the societal stigma surrounding addiction is to speak about it. We’re very lucky to have him on the program with us today to tell his story.
