While the Bosnian War ended more than twenty years ago, its effects can still be felt in the poverty and trauma of its people. As the independent documentary Among Wolves illustrates, however, a glimmer of hope and recovery comes from an unexpected source - the Wolves, a biker gang made up largely of Bosnian war vets who dedicate their time to doing humanitarian work in their region of the country. Whether protecting a herd of wild horses abandoned by society, or donating blood and rewiring electrical systems for schools, the Wolves are a stark contrast to the typical image of the biker.
To talk about the quiet, observational nature of Among Wolves and the intriguing story of its inception, I sat down with director Shawn Convey for a lovely chat that covered everything from the Wolves' charismatic leader, the impact of the war on these communities, and the curious challenges of filming a documentary when you don't speak the language of your subjects. Take a listen!
