  • 040: Beauty and Worth are Found Within with Tia Glover

On a daily basis, Tia Glover found herself defending her appearance at her boarding school when she was just 8 years old. She was surrounded by girls that weren't of the same race or from the same background, and she always felt like she stood out like a sore thumb. It happened so often that she didn't even know she was dealing with feelings of rejection as they took root.

Now, Tia runs a full-service image and style coaching business in Washington, D.C., where she's helped clients of all backgrounds project and improve their image. Raised in England and Nigeria with a background in law and psychology, she has a deep understanding of the fact that a positive first impression gives people much-needed confidence and positions them to achieve great success.

Today, Tia joins the podcast to talk about the gifts (and curses) parents leave their children with, finding acceptance in simply being yourself, and the power of truly understanding self-worth.

  • 038: When Life Hits Like a Riptide with Arwen Becker

A fun day almost ended in tragedy when Arwen Becker's teenage boys were pulled out to sea by a riptide on a deserted beach in Costa Rica. When her husband Randy noticed that they had drifted too far from the shore, he started furiously waiving for them to come in, completely unaware of the level of danger they were in.

For a brief moment, Easton's screams for help cut through the deafening waves and Randy knew something was terribly wrong. In an instant, he sprinted into the water and swam as fast he could to get out to them.

Even though Arwen's sons are decent swimmers, neither of them had ever dealt with a rip current like this before. Her oldest son Ashton was able to stay with his younger brother and help keep his head above the water until Randy arrived. After many anxious minutes, the whole family was safely back on the shore with the help of two strangers who also jumped in to help.

In this episode, Arwen shares the story of the family vacation that nearly ended in tragedy, and the lessons that the whole family learned that day. She also reminds us that life is full of risks, but our lives are meant to be lived and enjoyed.

    Pearls of Wisdom

    • Life is full of risks, but we still have to live our lives and enjoy the time we have.
    • Don't let guilt prevent you from moving forward. Beating ourselves up doesn't solve anything.
    • The value in getting life and term insurance while you're young and healthy.

  • 037: First Improv Performance was Almost Her Last with Kymberlee Weil

When Kymberlee Weil left the stage after her first improv performance, she told her comedy troop that she wouldn't be back and apologized. She thought she bombed because even her best friend wasn't laughing. When the night was over, she told her husband she was retiring from improv, and that comedy performance simply wasn't for her.

Thankfully, her best friend assured her after the show that she was hilarious and she had nothing to worry about. That night, she learned an important lesson – you can't control your audience's face.

Since then, Kymberlee has trained hundreds of TEDx speakers, improv performers, and international speakers at StorytellingSchool.com, where she teaches people how to use high-stakes, short-form storytelling to expand their influence. She's an NCAA Woman of the Year, a 4th degree black belt, an MBA, an author of multiple books, and the founder of an award-winning software development and licensing company.

Today, Kymberlee and Arwen discuss how improv can teach people how to power through failure, how the stories we tell ourselves impact who we are and who we become, and how the lessons Kymberlee learned in improv (and with her own coach) have helped her empower storytellers of all kinds.

  • 036: Chronic Illness was Her Hidden Blessing with Kelly Lynn Adams

While working 80+ hours each week, Kelly Lynn Adams' body was literally breaking down. The red flags were there, but she wasn't listening. When her body finally gave way, her doctor had no choice but to send her to the ER due to severe dehydration, fever and malnutrition. She spent the next two days in the hospital on an IV.

For the next two and a half months, all she could do was sleep. She was utterly exhausted. She developed a few chronic illnesses during that time, however they turned out to be a huge blessing. They taught her to listen to the warning signs and to slow down and truly enjoy life.

Kelly is a certified executive leadership life coach, speaker, and the creator of the Perfectly Imperfect podcast. She's spent over 14 years in corporate America working for brands like Gucci, Kenneth Cole, and Bed Bath & Beyond, and helps high achieving women manage their mindset, maximize their time, and monetize their businesses. She activates leaders, giving them the power to redefine and step into their next level of success without struggle or stress.

In today's conversation, Kelly reminds us of what can happen when we're on the verge of physical and mental burnout, why we need to listen to the warnings that so many of us ignore, and the beauty found when women support other women.

  • 034: Experiencing Joy is Worth the Risk with Arwen Becker

At 10 years old, Arwen Becker was thrilled to have the very rare opportunity to jump off the high dive after swimming practice. As she waited on the top step for her teammate to jump, she lost her footing and fell onto the concrete 15 feet below. The entire swimming class screamed in horror at her crumpled up body lying on the floor.

In the middle of the chaos, Arwen was amazed to discover that she didn't break her leg or hit her head. However, she quickly realized by what she saw, that her wrist was obliterated. As paramedics prepped her for the ride to the hospital in an ambulance, she wondered if the joy of the moment was worth the risk to her athletic career.

Today, Arwen shares some of the lessons she learned from this experience and reminds us about the inherent risks in everything that gives us joy in life - and all the ways life can prove that the risks are certainly worth it.

Heartbroken and devastated by his doubt in the viability of her own eggs, she asked his top RN, "Why am I doing this if he doesn't think I can do it?"
