Hilary has always had a keen interest in style, aesthetics and the decorative arts. She started her journey as a ballet and modern dancer, then moved to the study of interior design in college, and eventually found photography and styling after school. Along the way, Hilary also discovered blogging which provided her with a wonderful platform to express my love for fashion, interiors and photography with likeminded readers. In July of 2013, she launched her second blog called 'Our Style Stories.' As a supplement to the blog stories, she publishes a podcast where she interviews each Style Story guest. When she isn't blogging or podcasting, she enjoys working on set as a photo stylist in Dallas/ Fort Worth, TX.
Danielle had a great time chatting with Hilary of Our Style Stories. Hilary went to school for interior design but soon realized it was a lot of computer work and she enjoyed working with her hands and moving around. She shares how she it was transition to get out of school, work really hard to find work that she went to school for, and then realize it wasn't suited for her.
That is a big realization for anyone, and it is a common realization we hear often on She Percolates. This idea that you will spend your whole life after college working in the field you studied is crazy. To think that what you studied for 4 years will be what you do for the next 40-50 years is silly. You are going to evolve, you are going to grow, you interests will change.
"I have found myself in a place where I'm not doing the thing I thought I would be, I'm not pursuing a career based on the degree I got in school, or the plans I set out within that. So my idea of success has had to morph."
"If I can step back from the work that I am doing and feel a sense of peace and happiness, and not in a sort of content way. I think that it's good to always feel like there is more to do and you're not quite finished, but in a positive way. "
"I currently step back and see my work as taking care of my son primarily and my styling has taken a bit of a back seat and so has my blog... I'm at peace with the fact that this season is about something else."
Hilary also shares some of the lessons she has learned in the short time since her son was born. She says she has learned the hard way that she is at the mercy of something/someone else. She has to change what is important and she is surrendering more to be in the moment.
"One thing that I have had to learn, I think kind of the hard way through having my son is that, that's out of my control."
Hilary also shares with us some great advice she received from her friend Erin Loechner of Design For Mankind. Erin told her she needs to use her new lifestyle {having a baby} as something enriching for the blog. Hilary was focusing more on the logistics of having a baby and not being able to do as much. Erin helped Hilary to see things in a different light.
"This big life change was actually going to be almost like fertilizer for new ideas and ways of seeing the world."
