In this last episode for Women's Month, I'm talking to Dr. Blanca Bernal - climate scientist, Antarctic expedition participant, and co-founder of "Ellas Lideran" - a group of climate scientists who are working for gender equity in the conversation and decision-making on climate solutions, AND publishing books to bring children into the world of science.
From her native country of Spain, to her home in the US, to the Antarctica and around the world - Dr Bernal provides technical support to governments, companies, and organizations in climate change mitigation and resilience and through Ellas Lideran, promoting diversity in leadership for climate action, building bridges between science, society and decision-making for a more just and sustainable future.

Dr. Blanca Bernal is an ecosystem services analyst and biogeochemist. Inspired by the concepts of ecological engineering and ecosystem services, Blanca did a master's and doctorate in the US investigating how tropical and temperate wetlands (eg. marshes, riparian forests, or mangroves) mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon and improve water quality of hydrographic basins.
During her post-doctorate she delved into the biogeochemical aspects of carbon sequestration in coastal wetlands, and its application to mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change.

Jessica serves as a survivor's voice on advisory boards,  CJCC Georgia Human Trafficking Task Force, and aids in advising Anti Trafficking coalitions.  Jessica trains law enforcement, local organizations, the tattoo industry, and medical personnel on trafficking brandings (tattoos), gang tattoos, and breaking stigmas of mental health and addiction.

As the Founder of Atlanta Redemption Ink (ARI), Jessica has built a team of more than 37 tattoo artists & removal specialists in the state of Georgia, as well as 8 additional services providers across the United States that have a passion for ARI's mission.  Jessica has created a network of shops that became Georgia's first National Safe Place sites for at-risk youth.  Atlanta Redemption Ink has had the honor of serving survivors from Georgia to California through reputable service providers and specialists.  

In 2018, her team launched "Beyond Ink" which provides trauma-informed counseling, high school diplomas, life coaching, job readiness referrals, and safe housing referral to those in A.R.I in Georgia.

 As a survivor of DMST and overcomer of many obstacles along the way to healing,  Jessica brings a survivor's perspective knowledge and is a firm believer in survivors using their voices to speak out and not be silenced.

◆Happy International Women's Day 2021!◆  It was an honor to have the opportunity to mark this Women's Day with a conversation with Japanese friends of IWD, catch up with what's happening there this year with respect to gender equality, and talk with a woman who is embodying  the motto for  IWD 2021 - "Choose to Challenge" - as she campaigns to become the first female major of Nagoya, Japan's 4th largest city in one of the country's most conservative prefectures.  I am also hugely grateful to my guests for agreeing to have this challenging conversation in their second language because after 15 years away, my Japanese sucks!  
With my guests, Keiko Ogata 尾形けいこ様 and Akane Kurihara 栗原茜様, we talk about Keiko's current campaign in the Nagoya Mayoral election coming up this April 25th and her 4 main campaign planks, all requiring more thorough input, involvement and decision-making by women at every level of power.
Like elsewhere, the 2020 Pandemic in Japan exposed many social issues around economic and gender equality and the outcomes have been dire. A new and urgent awareness has been growing over the last few years and activism around International Women's Day is back on the calendar in Japan, with numerous events happening around the country highlighting the need for change.

We have never experienced a pandemic on the scale or lethality of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed 2 million people in 10 months and crippled economies and industries since it exploded on the scene in 2020.

The 2020 business stories of these 7 women entrepreneurs gives us a snapshot of what was and what's to come for small business, online or otherwise - and all in the context of the disproportionate economic impact on women last year - a far-reaching and under-reported issue. This short episode gives the background, the stories and 3 key take-aways for small business, going forward.

These entrepreneurs were guests of my podcast and are all true 2020 stories.  The impact that the events of last year had on these women tell the story of the people, the small businesses and the rise in entrepreneurship in 2020.  Each of them were all fighting to ride 2020 issues as they either started their business - by necessity or choice, pivoted business focus to surf the tidal wave, or modified operations to deal with new limitations to how they could do business.  

Those profiled here are:
Janelle Benjamin - started her own Diversity and Equity consultancy in this last precarious year through necessity but with determination to make a difference in the ongoing racial inequities in the workplace.

Tara Thompson - left her hospital job to start an online prenatal program to get the right education and support to women anywhere going thru their pregnancy in lock-down and to help stem the tide of maternal deaths. In addition she started the Nourish in Atlanta charity to help feed new moms in need in those critical first 6 weeks.

Susan Boelman saw her business - outdoor adventure retreats for women - stopped cold when COVID hit.  She modelled resiliency through nature through her private Facebook group and has pivoted to create virtual outdoor skills events to keep her business going until she can resume her thrilling live events.

Laurie Stewart - an early COVID patient with debilitating effects last man months, saw her life and business hugely impacted.  She had to pivot to offer virtual consultations to her clients but also lost an income stream when her long-affiliated supplement company revamped their sales model to survive the downturn, leaving their most-female representative high and dry.

Tahsha Bennett - found authorship, online publishing and in 2020 published her 4th self-help book, "Depression During COVID", added online coaching  and, after being on MY podcast, decided that was the perfect addition to how she helped her clients, and founded her own podcast  "I Said It with No Edit".

Caroline Ferguson - CEO Mindset Trainer and Cognitive Behavioral Hypnotherapist, saw her business go almost exclusively online allowing her to work with clients from various locations in the UK, and  support her elderly parents in lock-down in Scotland. She also diversified her income streams with an entry into property rentals.

Heidi Hackler - author and holistic health coach, was the entrepreneur most prepared for what 2020 threw at us.  For the last 7 years, Heidi has lived aboard and run her business from her sailboat on the Pacific coast of Mexico.  She has done all this online for years and offers programs, consultations and also reps a line of supplements that she recommends for her clients, and all from the galley of her boat.  When the necessity for isolation arose, Heidi and husband Kurt were already well set-up for that, able to independently live aboard, store the food and supplies they would need for weeks at a time, AND stay in touch with all her clients.
