Today I am going to discuss a topic that everyone is familiar with, especially these days. With people dying from COVID, police brutality, and many other tragedies in the world, grief is very common nowadays. We talked with Emmy award-winning director Lindsey Whissel Fenton about her new documentary about the reality of grief. Her film, Speaking Grief, highlights the true movement of how grief strikes and how it can manifest in different ways. This film stirs us in a direction to see grieving in a more positive light and can even act as a piece of healing. I will give a warning for anyone who has recently suffered from any type of grief, even if you consider it small. This episode may be triggering for you but believe me, we are all learning and healing in this episode including myself. Lindsey’s passion behind bringing empathy and authenticity to social issues through her medium speaks truth through this documentary. Let’s move on to our conversation with Lindsey.

I found an awesome organization that is shaking up things on their social platform. I got to speak with one of the co-founders, Mia Van Allen, and one of their social media extraordinaire, Emily Yankana on how their organization plans to change the status quo in what it means to be underrepresented in the music industry. These amazing ladies formed the Color of Music Collective to spotlight POC and LGBTQ+ representation in the music industry. Each week, they introduce a new panel of industry professionals who enlighten us about different topics relevant and resourceful for the POC and LGBTQ+ music community. These ladies are on the right track on social advocacy in the music industry and I am glad I had the opportunity to hear from them! And shoutout to other co-founders, Carla Hendershot and the rest of the team for this awesome organization!

There are many other podcasts before me that have been making waves with spotlighting women in the forefront in filmmaking. I stumbled upon a The Femme Regard Podcast with Tessa Markle and Carolina Alvarez when reading one of my podcast newsletters from Pod Movement. I was so surprised they highlighted a podcast in film! I reached out immediately! They were too cool and humble! Today they are going to talk a bit about their mission as a film production company to tell stories from the female gaze and put more women behind the camera. They also will share their story about the origins of their podcast and what they can offer you as a listener interested in filmmaking. When you listen to it, it’s gonna sound like more like girlfriends laughing over drinks! This show was pre-recorded some ago but be sure to catch the new season on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and much more. All the links to their podcast will be in the show notes! Hope y’all enjoy it! Let’s welcome on the ladies from Femme Regard!

We are doing a rewind of ESP 10 with filmmaker Tomeka M. Winborne—She is a writer/director that passionately loves to create stories that will invoke conversations. Her mission is to bring stories to the screen that embody the experiences and voices of people of color that are devoid of television and film. Like many independent filmmakers, Tomeka wears many hats to make sure her vision comes true. As a filmmaker, Tomeka centers many of her stories around social issues including immigration, HIV sex trafficking, youth aging out of foster care to name a few. She enjoys using various mediums to tell stories. In addition to making movies and podcasts, she’s also produced television segments, commercials, wrote a couple of novels, worked as a field reporter, and has been commissioned to produce documentaries. Today Tomeka will discuss her creative process in writing and filmmaking. We get a more in-depth look at her passion for film. We at She's So Reel will continue to amplify black stories in the film and entertainment sector. We are proud to do that! Let’s welcome Tomeka to the show! Before I close out, please take this time to not be divisive but to unite as one. The last thing we need is more division among us. Come together. Lastly, please register to vote. You have a powerful voice! Use it! The primaries are coming up so keep that in mind! So please take the time to vote. You can be the action for change.
