  • How to Recover Lost Freight Spend in 30 Days

In this episode of Ship Talkers, host Bobby sits down with Joe Magee to tackle one of the most overlooked problems in LTL shipping: invoice accuracy. Joe and Bobby dig into a recent Mastio & Company survey finding that half of shippers accept zero variance on their freight bills, and use that as a launching point for a practical, three part conversation on freight audit.

    What's covered:

They break down how any shipper, even one without MyCarrier, can stand up a working freight audit process in just 30 days. The goal isn't perfection, it's proving you can control freight spend fast by establishing a baseline: what you're quoted, what you're billed, and where the gaps are.

From there, they talk through what to look for when evaluating freight audit vendors, including why a good vendor should ask about your specific freight profile, carrier mix, and lane variability rather than offering a one size fits all solution.

Finally, they get into the dispute process itself, why it feels adversarial, what documentation carriers actually need to approve a dispute, and how having clean, structured data changes the outcome. Joe also walks through how MyCarrier's platform flags accessorial charges and rate discrepancies automatically, and the two close with a look at MyCarrier's payment processing capabilities, letting shippers pay LTL invoices in a few clicks with full remittance data synced to accounting systems like QuickBooks and NetSuite.

  • LTL Shipping Before and After MyCarrier: A Real Customer Breakdown

On this episode of Ship Talkers, host Bobby Russell sits down with Roberta Curtin, Office Manager at Allstate Rubber, a family owned flooring manufacturer and distributor based in Dalton, Georgia, the flooring capital of the US, founded in 1956 and now run by its second generation.

Roberta has been with Allstate Rubber for nine years and was there for the early rollout of MyCarrier, becoming a paying customer about three years in after realizing she could never go back to her old process. She shares what shipping looked like before MyCarrier (juggling five or six carrier websites just to build a quote), how dock times dropped to about 30 seconds once bills of lading came pre-loaded with pro numbers, and how giving her customer service team direct visibility into shipment status cut down on internal back-and-forth.

She also walks through her favorite features, including the Address Book for saving accessorials like liftgates, limited access, and government or school site fees, and Freight Assist for flagging known accessorials right on the quote screen. Roberta talks candidly about the shift from constant website hopping to having everything centralized on one page, how easy MyCarrier was to teach to new team members, and why real, responsive customer support has kept her a fan of the platform for years.

Bobby also surprises Roberta by turning on Invoice Hub live during the episode, MyCarrier's automated invoice matching tool, after learning she was still manually reconciling invoices by hand with a folder of paper bills of lading.

If you're an LTL shipper still bouncing between carrier websites, managing invoices on paper, or wondering what features you might be missing, this episode is packed with practical, real-world perspective from someone who has used the tool from the ground up.

  • The Dynamic Pricing Revolution Coming for LTL Carriers

The LTL industry is sitting on a pricing problem it helped create, and Danny Loe is one of the people working to fix it. After 26+ years in the space, including a long career at ABF/ArcBest, Danny stepped out of the corporate world to found SORS (Strategic Optimized Revenue Solutions), a consultancy helping LTL carriers move away from legacy tariff-based pricing toward smarter, transactional, and dynamic pricing models.

In this episode, Danny and host Bobby Russell dig into why the old way of pricing freight doesn't hold up in a transactional world, what dynamic pricing actually means in practice, and how better data from platforms like MyCarrier is finally giving both shippers and carriers the tools to win at the same time.

Plus: Amazon just announced it's entering the LTL market. What does that actually mean for carriers, shippers, and the competitive landscape? Ryan and Danny break it all down.

  • Solving the Dims Problem: How Dockware Is Leveling the Playing Field for Shippers

Tired of freight invoices that don't match your quotes? Dimensional weight chargebacks eating into your margins? In this episode, host Bobby sits down with Conor Godfrey, Co-Founder of Dockware, and Ryan Camacho, Solutions Engineer at MyCarrier, to dig into one of the most persistent — and costly — problems in LTL shipping: inaccurate freight dimensions.

From SpaceX docking algorithms to warehouse docks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the team breaks down how Dockware built the only certified mobile dimensioning app on the market using just a smartphone camera, how it plugs directly into MyCarrier, and why now — with NMFTA density-based pricing changes in full swing — shippers who don't get ahead of this will keep getting hit with surprise invoices.

    🔑 Key Topics Covered:

00:00 – Intros: Ryan's 20 years in logistics & Conor's journey from Peace Corps to freight tech 03:00 – How SpaceX docking technology became the foundation for Dockware

06:30 – The NMFTA/NMFC classification changes and why density-based pricing is here to stay

10:30 – Why dimensioning can't add friction — it has to be passive and fit the workflow

12:45 – How Dockware works: just a smartphone camera, no expensive hardware required 15:15 – Live demo results: within 1.5% variance vs. a stationary dimensionalizer

17:00 – The real cost of the current process (tape measures, paper tickets, manual data entry) 21:30 – Carrier-side stats: shippers are under-dimensioning by 30% on average; carriers see a 10% revenue bump after installing dimensionalizers

24:00 – Beyond billing: how accurate dims help you "earn contracts" and become a shipper of choice

25:00 – Coming soon: hazmat detection, damage scanning, piece count validation, and loss prevention tools

28:00 – The dream: one scan originates a full shipment — no terminal visit needed

30:30 – Why plug-and-play beats enterprise hardware projects every time

36:00 – How to ROI this in under 15 minutes (and why you've probably overestimated the cost by 5x)

37:30 – Real shipper feedback: warehouse teams actually enjoy using it

42:00 – Where to download Dockware and get started today

    🔗 Resources & Links Mentioned:

    1. 📱 Dockware App (Android): Search "Dockware" on the Google Play Store
    2. 🌐 Dockware Website: https://www.dockware.ai

    5. 📊 NMFTA / NMFC Classification Changes: Search "NMFC density-based class changes" for the latest updates from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association

    💡 Key Takeaways:

    1. Carriers have dimensionalizers in nearly every terminal and are already capturing revenue from mis-dimensioned freight — shippers need to level the playing field.
    2. The average freight invoice variance is $88–$94 per bill, affecting roughly 30% of all invoices on the MyCarrier platform.
    3. Dockware is the only certified mobile dimensioner using just a camera — no Lidar, no special sensors.
    4. The app works on 80% of Android devices and iOS support is coming within 8 weeks of recording.
    5. Avoiding just 2 dimensional chargebacks per year can cover the entire cost of the solution.
    6. Accurate dims don't just save money — they reduce disputes, protect against OS&D claims, and make you a more attractive shipper to carriers.

  • The FICO Score for Freight: How LTL Shippers Are About to Get Graded

What if LTL carriers could score shippers the same way banks score borrowers? In this episode, we sit down with Lance Healy a true pioneer of LTL technology to unpack his latest venture, FreightFax, and why a "freight credit score" could be the most disruptive idea the industry has seen in decades.

Lance has spent 25+ years building freight tech, including US patents in dynamic pricing, and he traces it all back to a scrappy startup in the late '90s where screen-scraping carrier websites led to one of the first API integrations in LTL. Now he's channeling that same problem-solving energy into FreightFax a shipper scorecard platform that grades shippers on ~24 behavioral factors the industry has long ignored.

    🔑 Key Topics Covered:

00:00 – Intro & Lance's origin story: how poverty and a startup led to pioneering LTL APIs in the late '90s

01:52 – FreightFax launches: what is a shipper scorecard and why does it matter?

05:23 – "Shipper of Choice" vs. "Network of Choice" — why your dock is only 50% of the picture

09:13 – The biggest blind spot in LTL today: AI and behavioral shipper data

12:04 – Dynamic pricing: patents, constraints, and why behavioral scoring is the missing link

16:03 – The FICO Score analogy: how FreightFax mirrors consumer credit reporting

16:35 – Getting competing carriers to share data: the legal, ethical, and trust challenges

23:45 – Surprising data finds: manual BOLs, incomplete RFPs & what still shocks Lance

25:34 – Using FreightFax to score 5,000-line carrier RFPs in seconds

28:01 – The "Lake Wobegon Effect": why shippers overestimate themselves — and how data humbles them

29:44 – Freight Karma: actionable steps to improve your shipper score

43:52 – Implementation: how easy is it for shippers and carriers to get started?

46:51 – Grading 3PLs: account scores vs. location scores and what carriers can now see

    💡 Why This Episode Matters:

Carriers have always graded shippers informally now there's data to back it up. Lance breaks down how dwell time, days-to-pay, damage claims, and dozens of other behavioral metrics will soon determine the rates shippers receive, just like a FICO score determines your mortgage rate. If you're a shipper, carrier, or 3PL, this one will change how you think about your freight operations.

  • Why Most TMS Implementations Fail Before They Start

Finding the right Transportation Management System (TMS) shouldn't feel like a shot in the dark but for most shippers, it does. In this episode, we sit down with Dave Pattelli, a supply chain and logistics technology veteran with roots in LTL carriers like Consolidated Freightways, Mid-States Express and Roadrunner, and SaaS experience at Kuebix (acquired by Trimble), Shipwell and G2Mint.  Dave is now the founder of PreShiftIQ, a matching platform designed to connect Shippers, Brokers and Carriers with Vendors that meet each party's unique needs.

    🔑 KEY TOPICS COVERED:

    1. Dave's 30+ year journey from union LTL carriers to the SaaS world — and why "it takes one to know one" matters in supply chain tech sales
    2. Why AI can't reliably distinguish between what a TMS vendor actually does vs. what their marketing says they do and how that puts buyers at a serious disadvantage
    3. How Dave is personally interviewing 100+ TMS vendors to build a verified, neutral matching engine with 27 data points
    4. The #1 mistake shippers make before even talking to a vendor: not knowing who they are or what their data says
    5. Why tribal knowledge and multi-system fragmentation ("If Bobby's not here, it doesn't happen") is silently destroying your operating margin
    6. The truth about buying committees: how to align 3–5 stakeholders with different needs without derailing the deal
    7. Best-of-breed vs. all-in-one: why the shift toward connected, API-first ecosystems may serve most shippers better than a single platform that does everything "okay"
    8. How to build a real ROI case and why chasing rate savings while ignoring workflow inefficiency leaves money on the table
    9. The EDI blind spot: why overlooking carrier connectivity during TMS selection can poison a new vendor relationship from day one
    10. How to use analytics beyond year one to keep extracting value from your TMS investment
