  • Shukai Ep 8.5: ‘No Game No Life: Zero’ World Premiere
Join Bryant and Tyler as they discuss the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) and the world premiere of ‘No Game No Life: Zero.’ Not only that, but Sentai Filmworks and the film festival brought us a very special presentation of the first anime film in existence. 100 years of anime, here’s to 100 years more!

Below I have information on the film, ‘The Dull Sword,’ LA-AFF, Sentai Filmworks, and Hurricane Harvey relief fund.

    Synopsis:

Six thousand years before Sora and Shiro were even a blink in the history of Disboard, war consumed the land, tearing apart the heavens, destroying stars, and even threatening to wipe out the human race. Amid the chaos and destruction, a young man named Riku leads humanity toward the tomorrow his heart believed in. One day, in the ruins of an Elf city, he meets Shuvi, a female exiled “Ex-machina” android who asks him to teach her what it means to have a human heart.
    (Via Sentai Filmworks)

The film runs 106 minutes long and is a prequel to the 12 episode long series, No Game No Life, from 2014. This film has been long awaited and I can tell you: it is amazing. Currently, the anime series is rated an 8.43 on MyAnimeList.net and beloved by Tyler and the Shukai crew. Fans are STILL awaiting news from Madhouse to announce season 2…
For the World Premiere event, we saw the ‘Dubbed’ version, which we discuss in the podcast. It was exciting because we got to meet and hear a Q&A with Scott Gibbs, Caitlynn French, ADR Director Kyle Colby Jones, and producer Sho Tanaka!

Gibbs voices Riku for NGNL:Zero and Sora in the series.
    .
French voices Shuvi for Zero and Shiro in the series.

It was found in an antique shop in Osaka in central Japan in March 2008.[1] This film is a 2-minute silent short that tells a history about a samurai‘s foolish purchase of a dull-edged sword. It was released on June 30, 1917.

This silent animated film was absolutely amazing and, again, in the podcast we discuss our feelings about it at length. Here is the short film restored:

  • Shukai Ep 6.5 AX Special: What is the Worst Anime?
I can definitely say that this Anime Expo was insanely interesting. I overall had a lot of fun, but there were some crazy mishaps. Before we go full into my article, let’s hear from some attendees!

I ran around (randomly) to find the greatest answer to the greatest question I could think of 10 seconds before clicking record: What is the worst anime of all time. You will hear some familiar people and hopefully have fun listening, too!

Don’t worry, Shukai episode 7 will be out NEXT WEEK so you can hear our experiences from this year’s AX! Below I have a slideshow of those I interviewed as well!

Anime Expo 2017… AHHHHHHH. I have never been to a convention that turned around so quickly. If you read the news stories, are in one of the Facebook groups, or saw the smoke signals, the first day was amazingly horrific. I will have to admit that I wasn’t affected by the badge pick up or waiting to get into the con, however, that energy definitely prevailed the halls.
I have gone to four Anime Expos prior to this year (2012-15). I missed last year, which all I hear are horror stories, because of my father’s wedding. This year, as I knew, was going to have an immensely larger number from the year prior. If you didn’t happen to know, AX 2016 hit 100,420 attendees which was 10% more than 2015. This year, the numbers “reached 115,726 including Pre-Show Night, marking a 15% increase of attendance from 2016,” exhibitors, press, professional, and volunteers. Holy. Crap.

So what are the bad things, Tyler?
Well buckle up Bessie, I have to start with the physical aspect. Every year I enjoy being in the crowd on Day 1 watching the ‘Opening Ceremony’ and going in with everyone. Nothing makes me more hyped than *slowly* charging for those exhibit room doors. The prior years I never had an issue. This year, one of the 3 escalators was down and they were trying to squeeze that ungodly amount of people (picture seen above, an hour beforehand, so imagine what it looked like when the doors opened) going up 2 escalators. The cast of Shukai and I were squished, pushed, pulled, and terrified.
It amazes me how SDCC can handle it’s attendees, but AX has issues each year. I understand that it is hard to control a crowd, however, I would think safety would be one of the top concerns while putting together a con. From now on I think I will just wait until I can just walk in…
Another thing that ticked me off is the same thing a lot of cons don’t control (and this may be stupid, I guess): wagons. Seriously. Stop bringing your goddamn kids unless they are well-behaved and/or in a stroller. I almost messed up 4 or 5 wagons last weekend and it was terrifying. While I am on the subject, how about teach your kids how to act when there are 100,000 people around them. Don’t run, push, or not pay attention when walking. I hate terrible parents…
What is worse than waiting to get to a con? Waiting for the shuttle to take you back to your hotel. Needing to go home when you have a crap ton of swag, purchases, backpacks, and a body pillow…. wait what? You just want to fucking go home. Saturday night was so enraging, waiting an hour and a half for our shuttle to come pick us up at 8PM to drop our shit off, while the volunteer shuttles were arriving every 5 minutes (or less). I am very happy that they are taking care of the volunteers, without them, we wouldn’t have a fun con, BUT COME ON. The location switch from Saturday and Sunday actually helped out alot, so I am insanely grateful for that. Thank you.
The last complaint, may come as no surprise, is the volunteer/line situation. Holy crap for panels and whatnot there was barely any communication or knowledge as to what the hell was going on.

We are BACK! Sorry for the long wait, but we have another gathering of anime/manga loving crazies! We had a team at E3 so we had to use our old equipment, so sorry for the mediocre quality.

  • Shukai Episode 5: Getting over Seasons and ALA
Kevin and Tyler meet up with CSUF Anime Club President and boardmembers Matt, Casey, and Mary to talk about their crazy time partying, ribbon hunting, geeking out, and post-con blues.

Other topic: Seasons’ use in anime.

    Mission Statement:

We host member-volunteer run events for the education and appreciation of anime, manga and related subjects.

Anime LA was easily one of our favorite conventions we have been to since GGG was formed. This convention is all about socializing, celebrating, and escape, but on a whole new level. With the ribbons, game rooms, dance scenes, karaoke, raves, shows, and use of space, it’s unbelievable how much we didn’t want it to end. We made some fantastic friends and memories and we can’t wait to attend next year.

We hope to see you next year!

  • Shukai Ep 4: PMX 2016 & End of Con Season
Well, Con season is over and we ended it on a pretty good note in Pasadena, CA at the Pacific Media Expo. We reflect on this past year and discuss what really makes and breaks conventions! Join  newcomers Edward and Norman, old-jerky Tyler, and host Kevin in this conned-out episode of ShuKai! Tyler also gives his additional thoughts below!

    (Image from PMX website)
    About PMX:

Pacific Media Expo is a new generation of convention for a new generation of fans! PMX brings the cutting edge of Asian entertainment to America, whether it is the newest anime from Japan, the hottest bands from the Pacific Rim, the latest street fashion from Harajuku, or the most disturbing horror films from Asia. PMX seeks to create an entertainment community for artists, industry, and their fans.
America’s first major trade show dedicated to Asian-Pacific popular culture and entertainment media, Pacific Media Expo (PMX) is an industry event sponsored by the Pacific Media Association. Pacific Media Expo is showcased annually. The show will feature honored guests, live performances, panel discussions, autograph sessions, Asian cinema and animation video rooms, art exhibitions and one of the country’s only exhibit halls dedicated to Asian media and pop culture.

    (Via PMX website)

We recorded our episode on the second day of the convention, and we have some additional thoughts on the convention. We do have video footage that may or may not be turned into a video on YouTube.
These opinions are purely Tyler’s and not the other three staff who attended. First off, Saturday was fun I do want to make sure that was said and the stance from the episode. However, the things I do want to point out from this weekend:

The convention was very, very low attended, especially Sunday. The only 2 places we saw a relatively good amount of people were the Filipino Martial Arts Tournament and the Fashion Show. After talking to exhibitors and some of the (actually pleasant) volunteers, the biggest issue was moving the convention from near LAX to Pasadena. Which takes me to number 2.

They had one TINY Exhibit Hall and a smaller artist alley. There were around 18-20 booths in the Exhibit Hall and Artist Alley didn’t have many artists there. It was mostly products like pillows, wallets, and collectibles. I don’t want to rag on the amount of exhibitors, but the expo put them in separate rooms which made the convention look small and boring. The smarter thing to do would be to put them in the same room to make it look more exciting and worth people’s time. The two tiny rooms made it feel useless to walk through more than 2 times.

The voice acting guests there wasn’t a bad selection, like our good and talented friend, Joe Ochman was there and Ezra Weisz, Bob Klein, Corina Boettger, Valerie Arem, and a few more. You can see the full list here. Now, it’s actually nice when small cons have guests at all, but the guests were put in front of the exhibit hall, which was awkward, and gave more reason to not go back into that tiny room after one or two walkthroughs because they rotated the voice actors and you wanted to stick around to see who was next. Also, most of them were only there one day (unless they wanted to come back the next day as attendees).

The Anime Guest of Honor guests were really cool. Norman and Edward (pictures below) were able to get autographs from both Masashi Kudo<...

Kevin and Tyler venture over to AkibaFest in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, CA, USA, Planet Earth! Find out what we thought about the brand new, annual festival! celebrating Japanese Pop culture!
Kevin and Tyler interview Joanna and Alex from Aniplex/Akibafest about the event this year and what to look forward to next year!

This year marks the first occasion of AkibaFest, and we are excited to welcome you to what we hope is the first of many celebrations together. We’re sincere when we say that this is truly “a new kind of anime fan festival,” because AkibaFest is created personally by the industry’s leading anime companies for you, the fans.
AkibaFest is our way of saying “thank you” to all the loyal fans that have supported the anime industry throughout the years. The notion of bringing “Akiba to you” stems from our core belief that anime, J-Pop, Japanese fashion and culture are alive and well in North America because of the powerful bond and passion our fans have for each of these things. We want AkibaFest, in partnership with the Little Tokyo Business community, to be an event where fans can gather together and celebrate and enjoy what you love, side by side with members of the industry.
