In this episode of the SIANI-podcast Kristoffer Westman invited three university students Konrad Loimer, Catharina and Eleftheria Papadopoulou to talk about our food system. How can we make food consumption more sustainable? Is local always better than imported food? Do we really need to have access to all sorts of foods? Will a plant-based diet save the planet? These are the questions we discuss in this episode.

Our food system is one of the key drivers behind the drastic warming of our planet. We need an individual behavioral change in food consumption to reverse this trend. It may sound overwhelming but remember that social change starts from sharing ideas and opinions about new sustainable solutions. Sunil Abeyasekera and David Falk invited Karl Gåsste to the SIANI HQ to learn more about the controversial practice of dumpster diving: saving food from the landfill (by literally jumping into a dumpster!). Kalle speaks to us about his personal experiences and provides some helpful tips if you feel like rescuing some items yourself. But what is the future of dumpster diving? As zero-waste and sustainability appears more frequently in the societal lexicon, will this money saving endeavour become widely adopted, perhaps even encouraged? Or, is rummaging through a dumpster to find fresh food symptomatic of a broken system? Dumpster diving can be considered a stepping stone to a more sustainable world, as its existence highlights the magnitude of wasted food. So, how are some restaurants and supermarkets redirecting their “waste” to consumers?

This episode interviewed John Johns form Fohns food and we looked at Great to be in touch with you and very happy to hear about your interest in the SIANI meeting.

What I’m looking for is for you to do a short presentation (10-15mins (will confirm closer to the date)) about the work with or relating to the Agroforestry Network, making links to the SIANI mission of ‘food and nutrition security for all’.  So you have a lot of room to create your presentation, maybe take a really focused look at one thing, or a broad view.  The audience will be other SIANI members from Kenya and surrounding countries, so I’d really like to inspire them with the fantastic wok you have been doing.

I may also ask you to participate in a panel, but again, that’s not confirmed yet, just an idea.  And of course we’d like it if you joined for the whole of the event, as a participant and SIANI member (if your not a member of SIANI I urge you to become one today).
