Sick Folks of Cinema Ep.24 Eli (2019)

In this week's episode, we seek treatment for a rare disease inside a medical facility that looks like a haunted house. Of course, I'm talking about the 2019 horror film Eli directed by Ciarán Foy. It's available to watch on Netflix. Make the popcorn. Make a drink. Turn off the lights boos and ghouls. It's time for the Sick Folks of Cinema. 

Storyline: Eli Miller is a young boy suffering from a rare disease that causes severe allergic reactions to the outdoors, forcing him to live his life in protective gear. His parents, Rose and Paul, have taken him to Dr. Isabella Horn's secluded medical facility, a large, old house that has been modernized and quarantined. Eli is initially overjoyed that the facility allows him to remove his "bubble suit", embrace his parents, and enjoy comforts previously denied to him. His joy is short-lived, however, as he begins to experience supernatural phenomena in the house. He also begins his treatments, which are excruciatingly painful. The specters repeatedly leave him the message lie, and Eli begins to wonder if they are trying to warn him about Horn's treatments.

Sick Folks of Cinema Ep. 23 SPELL (2020),

In this week's episode, a man crash lands and awakens in the attic of a traditional Hoodoo practitioner. Let's dive into this horror-filled episode where we discuss and review SPELL (2020). The film was directed by Mark Tonderai. Turn the lights off. Make the popcorn and strap in. 

Storyline: While flying to his father's funeral in rural Appalachia, an intense storm causes Marquis (Omari Hardwick) to lose control of the plane carrying him and his family. He awakens wounded, alone, and trapped in Ms. Eloise's (Loretta Devine) attic, who claims she can nurse him back to health with the Boogity, a Hoodoo figure she has made from his blood and skin. Unable to call for help, Marquis desperately tries to outwit and break free from her dark magic and save his family from a sinister ritual before the rise of the blood moon.

In this week's episode, we venture into 1922 a horror novel turned film written by the horror icon Stephen King. Let's explore the dangers of pride and greed. How dangerous is desperation? Will mankind kill for legacy. Starring actors Thomas Jane and Molly Parker. The film was directed by Zak Hilditch.

Storyline: Featuring shades of Edgar Allen Poe's ["A Tell-tale Heart" and] "The Black Cat", 1922, with a Bonny and Clyde sub-plot, based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, centers on a simple but proud farmer, Wilfred James, who, with the reluctant help of his teenage son, murders his wife to gain ownership of her inherited land. Shortly after, however, strange and supernatural occurrences begin to plague both James and his farm. Is it just simple bad luck, or is it the work of something much more sinister?

Storyline: After falling into a lengthy coma following a freak accident involving hip gyration, a now aged Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) wakes up in an East Texas nursing home, where he befriends Jack (Ossie Davis), an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy. After residents of their quiet retirement community start dying of dubiously unnatural causes, Elvis and Jack discover that the perpetrator is Bubba Ho-Tep (Bob Ivy), an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions.

Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realizes that Eli needs to drink other people's blood to live he's faced with a choice. How much can love forgive? Set in the Stockholm suburb of Blackeberg in 1982.

In this week's episode, we venture into 1905 London. A brother seeks to find his missing sister who's been taken by a religious cult. Seriously folks what's the worst that could happen on an island in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere? Let's discuss and review the Apostle (2018) directed by Gareth Evans. 

Synopsis: London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives. As Thomas infiltrates the island's community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult's ranks nonetheless - and uncovers a secret more evil than he could have imagined.
