New technology is allowing researchers to look beyond standard autopsy results to investigate viruses and inflammation to point to possible causes of some cases of SIDS.

Dr Robin Haynes from the Boston Children's Hospital, working in part with Australian charity River's Gift, identified specific viruses and inflammation of the brain stem in some cases.
