All are welcomed to the event at Sts. Peter and George Coptic Orthodox Church in Westlake.

Members of the Christian Egyptian community from around Northeast Ohio gathered at the Sts. Peter and George Coptic Orthodox Church in Westlake to celebrate their rich culture. 

Coptic was the primary language of Egypt prior to the arrival of Arabs to the region, spoken from the 5th century to around the 1400s, when language use shifted to mostly Arabic. Coptic is still the language of the Egyptian Christian Orthodox Church and is used in hymns and prayers. 

In this audio soundscape, Signal Cleveland’s Gennifer Harding-Gosnell hears from church members and other attendees about why the Egyptian Festival is important to them. The soundscape features George Girgus chanting in the Coptic language.

Public Meetings Report for the week of July 8, 2024

🏫🎒In this week’s Public Meetings Report, we focus on the Cleveland Metropolitan School District Board of Education business meeting on Tuesday, June 25.  At the meeting Documenters listened in as friends and family of the late Cleveland educator and civil rights activist, Arnold Pinkney discussed his legacy. Pinkney passed away in 2014. Earlier this summer CMSD renamed their East Professional Center building in Pinkney’s memory.

Also, Documenters caught CMSD CEO Warren Morgan’s presentation on disproportionate absenteeism and suspensions among Black students and students with disabilities across the district. Get the details in about five minutes in this week’s episode. 🎧📻👇🏿

🛼🪩The City of Cleveland's Zelma Watson George recreation center features a roller skating rink, open all year round, to residents of all ages and skill. The rink hosts many different themed skate nights, and Tuesday is a discount night, where admission is just $3.

United Skates of America puts on many of the themed skate events held at the rink, including a 'Throwback Thursday' skate featuring music from the '80s, '90s, and '00s.

🎆Happy Independence Day! The Cleveland Documenters team is taking a much needed break from local government meeting coverage this holiday week. But, Documenters have plenty to tell you about what happened in last week’s meetings. 

In this week’s Public Meetings Report, Cleveland Documenters learned about the “magic bubblers” the Cleveland Metroparks hopes will reduce bad bathroom smells. Also, Cuyahoga County Council passed 16 resolutions, including approval to pay for road repairs and homeless youth services. Learn more in this week’s episode. 👂🏿📻🎧

The Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects downtown to the near West Side was open for exploring on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22. Visitors learned about the bridge’s history as a main thoroughfare for streetcars in the early 20th century while being treated to an art show combined with live music and dance performances.

Highlights from public comment at Cleveland City Council before they head out on summer break.

🏛️📢Cleveland City Council holds public meetings most Monday nights, where laws are passed, condolences and congratulations are given to notable members of the community…. AND residents are given the opportunity to speak directly to Council through public comment.

"Most Mondays nights" because right now Cleveland City Council is taking its annual summer break from regular Monday meetings. Council's last regular meeting was on Monday, June 3. It's next regular meeting will be held Monday, September 9th. That means for 14 weeks residents will not have an opportunity to make an in-person public comment at a Cleveland City Council meeting. (Council has said they will be accepting written public comments via its website all summer long.)

For this special edition of the Public Meetings Report we highlight a few of the many public comments made at Cleveland City Council before they headed out on break. From gratitude to city staff, ideas to better use city-owned vacant lots, to support for the city flag from the great-granddaughter of the "Betsy Ross of Cleveland." Public Meetings Report for the week of June 10, 2024

A cyber attack shut down Cleveland City Hall earlier this week. Meetings at City Hall were canceled, including a few meetings Cleveland Documenters were looking forward to covering (looking at you, Board of Zoning Appeals 😢💘). But, Documenters didn't miss much else, including a marathon set of Cleveland City Council meetings ahead of their 14 week summer recess. 

In this week’s Public Meetings Report, highlights from the over 50 pieces of legislation Council discussed and decided on that day. Documenters caught some council members' concerns that state laws could create a monopoly of recreational cannabis dispensaries, and saw council increase the amount of campaign contributions council members can accept.
