Coconino National Forest firewood permits are now available online via the Forest Service’s new e-permit system at https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/. Permittees must possess a printed physical permit while harvesting and transporting products. The permit does not need to be attached to the load or displayed on a vehicle dashboard. The Prescott Valley Police Department would like to make motorists and motorcycle riders aware of recent changes to Arizona’s motorcycle lane-filtering law that took effect on September 12, 2026.

Arizona law allows motorcycles to lane filter under the following specific conditions:

• Traffic is stopped
• There are at least two lanes traveling in the same direction
• The posted speed limit is 45 mph or less
• The motorcycle is traveling 15 mph or less
• The rider can safely make the movement

A common example is a motorcyclist slowly moving between two lanes of vehicles that are stopped at a red traffic signal. When all requirements of the law are met, this is referred to as lane filtering and is legal in Arizona.

Lane filtering is different from lane splitting. Lane splitting generally refers to a motorcycle traveling between lanes or passing vehicles when traffic is moving or otherwise operating between vehicles. Motorcyclists may not travel between lanes of moving traffic under the lane-filtering exception.

Effective September 12, 2026, Arizona law was amended to provide that a person who violates the applicable lane-filtering provisions of A.R.S. § 28-903 may be charged with Reckless Driving under A.R.S. § 28-693, a Class 2 misdemeanor. The change makes it especially important for motorcycle riders to understand the difference between legal lane filtering and illegal lane splitting.

Motorcyclists should remember: If traffic is moving, do not split the lanes. Drivers should also remain aware that motorcycles may legally filter between stopped vehicles when all requirements of the law are met. Through continued education, responsible riding, and greater awareness among everyone sharing the road, we can work together to improve motorcycle safety throughout Arizona.
