Patty Bell-Demers, who has led the United Way of Yavapai County (UWYC) for the past 18 months, will step down as Executive Director this month to focus on working directly with nonprofit organizations. “It has been an honor to lead and help grow this important organization, and I’m pleased to leave UWYC well-positioned to continue expanding its services that improve lives and build strong communities in Yavapai County,” Bell-Demers said. Current staff members will manage day-to-day operations under the direction of the organization’s Board of Directors until a new Executive Director is hired. Prescott has long been hailed as Arizona's Christmas City, but how did this central Arizona city come to gain this moniker? Brief History of Prescott Founded in 1864 as the Territorial Capital of Arizona, Prescott became known as a mining town with popular guests of the Wild West such as Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. The Arizona Miner reported that the name "Prescott" was accepted because Prescott, author of The History of the Conquest of Mexico, was...

It was just 80 years ago today, December 26, 1941, when Manila, the capitol city of the Philippines was declared an Open City. What that implies is the city will not be defended, hence, no reason for the Japanese to continue their bombing attacks against the civilian population. The decision to meet the Japanese invasion forces on the beaches was a failure, the Philippine Army was no match for the highly trained and motivated Japanese soldiers, most of whom were combat veterans from four years of war in China. The plan now for the American and Philippine Soldiers was a...

It was just 120 years ago today, December 24, 1901, when our benevolent government finally allowed Americans to mail Post Cards. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, those timely little cards you get in the mail from friends and loved ones were actually not even called post cards back in the day. In the late 1800’s, when these types of cards became common place, the government would not allow you to write on the back,...
