The Prescott Fire Department is joining a national tribute to “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters”. Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. In 2017, the Foundation created Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters to recognize the 25th anniversary of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Since then, Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters has expanded to include fire departments and families lighting their homes in red. As dusk...

On Saturday, September 25th, Prescott Valley Mayor Kell Palguta posted an announcement that the Town Council had voted to approve the purchase of the old Yavapai County Coor Center along with the adjoining properties up near the horse track on Hwy 89A. In his announcement, Palguta wrote, "The Town is expecting to partner with a third party to bring in inline hockey along with a variety of other youth-related programs." He went on to explain the plans will allow the remaining parcels to be converted for outdoor recreation activities like a BMX dirt track. The town has all received interest...

This week is the first full week of Fall, my favorite season. School sports are in full swing with all of our teams in action; football, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, and cross county at Chino Valley High School and volleyball and cross country at Heritage Middle School.
This week is the Chino Valley High School Homecoming with the theme “Lights, Camera, Action: Homecoming”. Each day is a different dress up theme and then there is the Top Gun volleyball game on Monday, the Powderpuff football game followed by the Bonfire on Tuesday, and finally the Homecoming Dance on Wednesday. The Homecoming Royalty will be announced at Friday’s football game on Friday October 1st when the Cougars go up against Coronado High School.
One of the biggest challenges that we have face this school year is transportation. We are currently minimally staffed with bus drivers and we recently had some driver absences due to illness along with other unavoidable circumstances. This has led to the District cancelling our Prescott Valley route with the hope of bringing it back as soon as we can. The lack of qualified bus drivers is not unique to Chino Valley Schools and is a nationwide concern.
If you or someone you know is interested in being a bus driver, please call our transportation department at 928-636-2305 and ask to speak to our transportation director, Kriss Walton. You do not need to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to start. We will pay you as you as we train you to get your CDL and bus certification. If you are unsure about whether you can drive a bus, call Kriss and she will set you up to get behind the wheel of a bus to try out a test drive. It is easier than it may seem.
One of our most important strategic partners is Yavapai College. They work closely with the District and Mountain Institute Career and Technical Education District to provide career and technical education programing for Chino Valley High School students. In addition, YC provides dual enrollment classes with CVHS where students can get both high school and college credit for a variety of classes.
YC is offering a great deal right now. Anyone can take one YC class for free, no tuition or fees, this semester. There are over 100 late start classes to choose from that begin on October 11th and end in December. This is a great way to test out college or brush up on some skills.
The district is excited to have been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by Government Finance Officers Association for fiscal year 2020. This award is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and is an indication that the district has clearly communicated its financial story and meets the spirit of full disclosure. All of the District’s financial information can be found on the district website under Departments/Business Office/Financial Transparency.
As a special note, the district’s next Governing Board meeting is taking place on a special date and at a special location. For the first time ever, the Governing Board will meet in Paulden at the Paulden Community Center, 24050 N Marblehead Avenue. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 6th at 5:00 p.m. in order to avoid conflicting with the district’s fall break which is October 11 – 14.

It is with sadness the Town of Prescott Valley shares that former Mayor Harvey Skoog died on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at his home. He was 81 years old. Few people in Prescott Valley had more of a hand in the community’s direction than Harvey Skoog. He retired in January 2018 after 26 total years of service on the Town Council. Mayor Skoog moved with his family from the Valley of the Sun to Prescott Valley in 1982. He and Edna, his wife of 61 years, have nine children, 59 grandchildren, and 62 great-grandchildren. First appointed to Town Council in...

Arizona's monsoon season officially ends Sept. 30 and this year's rains already have made 2021 among the highest on record. "The season, which begins June 15 started off fairly dry, but once the monsoon rains arrived, they broke records in some areas of the state," Arizona State Climatologist Erinanne Saffell said. "By the end of July, 84% more monsoonal rain had fallen in Phoenix than all of last summer, and drought conditions improved in parts of the state." The Salt and Verde rivers watershed, which stretches across 12,500 square miles of central Arizona, had its wettest July and August in...
