The yard signs might be popular, but reality doesn't need to win a popularity contest to prevail. Nietzsche had a unique way of picking apart the kind of pathological nice-ness that pervades our culture today. There are plenty of modern examples to choose from for understanding Nietzsche's suspicion of this sickly form of sympathy.
