Silver to Bronze: A Marvel Comics Podcast episodes

  • (26) Amazing Spider-Man: “If This Be My Destiny…” or “If This Be Our Favorite Story…”

In this episode of Silver to Bronze, Scott and I revisit one of Spider-Man’s most iconic early arcs: “If This Be My Destiny…” from Amazing Spider-Man #31–33. These three issues, crafted by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, showcase a pivotal turning point in the character’s history. While a Silver Age story, it set the stage for the emotional depth and heroic grit that would define Spider-Man throughout the Bronze Age.

We talk about Ditko’s masterful art and panel storytelling, the layered pacing of Peter Parker’s struggles, and the unforgettable “lifting sequence” that remains one of the most powerful moments in Marvel history. These issues blew us away and there is no wondering why this arc still resonates with readers more than half a century later.

  • (25) The Covers That Made Us True Believers!

This week Scott and I set aside story arcs to talk about the covers that grabbed our attention and stayed with us. These are not the most iconic images in comics history, but they are the ones that meant the most to us personally. We each brought our favorites, compared notes, and had a blast sharing why these covers still feel special.

  • (24) How ROM the Spaceknight Captured Our Comic-Loving Hearts

This week, Scott and I are talking about one of our favorites from back in the day, ROM the Spaceknight. We look at what made this series stand out, from Bill Mantlo’s heartfelt and imaginative writing to Sal Buscema’s classic Marvel artwork. ROM might have started as a toy tie-in, but for us it became something much more. Join us as we revisit the battles with the Dire Wraiths, the cosmic themes, Scott’s obsession with Galactus’ eyes, and why this series still holds such a special place in our comic-loving hearts.

This week, Scott and I have some fun with the Fantastic Four, talking about a mix of issues that caught our eye for all kinds of reasons. There are funny moments, memorable collaborations, and plenty of Silver and Bronze Age storytelling. It is a lighthearted trip through Marvel’s First Family that is all about enjoying the ride.

  • (22) The Fantastic Four: First Steps – Marvel’s First Family Gets a New Start

This week, Scott and I step away from the comics to talk about the new movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It’s a rare thing for us to focus on a film, but this one got our attention. Consider this your spoiler alert. The only real spoiler might be that there’s no Impossible Man!

If you’ve seen the movie, come hang out with us for a laid-back conversation about Marvel’s first family: Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (the Thing), who proves once again that you can take the guy out of Yancy Street, but not Yancy Street out of the guy.

  • (21) Amazing Spider-Man: Secrets, Clones, and Confusion

This week, Scott and I take on one of the most talked-about storylines from the Bronze Age of Spider-Man. We’re looking at Amazing Spider-Man issues 141 to 150, which mark the beginning of what would later become known as the Clone Saga. These stories originally ran fifty years ago in 1975 and shocked readers with the apparent return of Gwen Stacy, a character whose death had already become a defining moment for both Peter Parker and Marvel Comics as a whole. Grab a beer, light up a cigar and hang with us as we finally get around to talking proper Peter Parker/Spider-man!

  • (20) Daredevil: Born Again (Part 2)

This week, Scott and I continue our discussion of Daredevil: Born Again. We left off right in the middle of the story, and things only get more intense from here. This arc has been a longtime favorite of Scott's, and it’s been fascinating for me to experience it for the first time. We wrap up our thoughts on what makes this such a landmark Daredevil story and why it still holds up today.

  • (19) Daredevil: Born Again (Part 1)

This week, Scott and I begin our discussion of Daredevil: Born Again. This story has been on our list since the beginning, and it was also requested by a listener. It was a favorite of Scott's when it first came out, but this is my first time reading it. We had such a good time talking about it that we were forced to cut the episode into two parts!

This week, Scott and I return to the world of Alpha Flight for part two of our conversation about the first twelve issues of the series, along with the “return” of Guardian that follows. We talk about John Byrne’s evolving approach to the characters and how the book both fits within and breaks away from typical Marvel team books.

This week, Scott and I kick off a two-part dive into one of my childhood favorites and a first-time read for Scott. We're talking about John Byrne's Alpha Flight. Pull up a chair, kick up your feet, and hang out with us as we look at the first issues, focusing on the original lineup and Byrne’s approach to building a team that is purely Canadian.
