🏡 Most people think aging in place simply means staying in your own home.
But remaining independent takes much more than a house.
It takes relationships.
It takes neighbors.
It takes trusted resources.
And it takes a community that's willing to step in before a small challenge becomes a crisis.
In this episode of the Simplify Senior Transitions Podcast, Dale Corpus sits down with Claes Elfving and Mekhala Shekar, Co-Chairs of San Ramon Valley Village, to discuss the growing Village Movement and why community may be one of the most important—and often overlooked—ingredients for healthy aging.
Claes shares the deeply personal story that inspired him to help start San Ramon Valley Village after his mother suffered a serious fall while living alone. That experience reinforced how quickly everyday situations can become life-changing and why older adults need support systems long before an emergency occurs.
Following a distinguished 42-year career in Human Resources with the Federal Government—including service with the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Military Sealift Command (Pacific), U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Office of Special Counsel—Claes has dedicated his retirement to serving older adults in the San Ramon Valley. He also serves as President of the Danville San Ramon Rotary Club.
Mekhala brings more than 25 years of leadership experience spanning both technology and healthcare. Working at the intersection of strategy, operations, and healthcare innovation, she has seen firsthand how difficult it can be for families to navigate today's healthcare system.
As an immigrant with parents living overseas, she also understands the emotional challenge of supporting aging loved ones from a distance. Her personal experiences—and her desire to strengthen community support for older adults whose families may not live nearby—led her to join forces with Claes in bringing the Village Movement to the San Ramon Valley.
Together, they explain how San Ramon Valley Village is building a volunteer-driven network that helps older adults remain independent, connected, and engaged throughout San Ramon, Danville, Alamo, Blackhawk, and Dougherty Valley.
In this episode, you'll learn:
✅ What the Village Movement is and how it began
✅ Why aging in place is about more than staying in your home
✅ How community support helps prevent isolation and loneliness
✅ How volunteers assist with transportation, companionship, errands, technology, light household projects, and more
✅ Why families should begin building support systems before a crisis occurs
✅ The role social connection plays in healthy aging
✅ Why today's older adults are choosing to remain in their homes longer
✅ How local businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders can partner with Village organizations
✅ Ways you can become a member, volunteer, donor, or community champion
One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is simple:
Aging in place doesn't mean aging alone.
When communities intentionally come together to support older adults, everyone benefits—not just seniors, but their families, neighbors, and the community as a whole.
