The Angel speaks to Mary. This poem zooms in on the momentous, yet private moment in history when Mary was visited by God's angel and told of her imminent pregnancy of Jesus, the son of God. Her story is found in Luke 1:26-38. Finally, the prophecy was to be fulfilled many thousands of years after God told the serpent in Genesis 3:15 that, through Eve's genealogy, a saviour would be born who would conquer Satan. God's people had been waiting about 700 years for the prophecy of the Saviour's birth, Immanuel, to be fulfilled.
When I found this Featured Image of a young woman looking down and touching her stomach, I imagined that the young Mary would have done the same after the visit from God's angel, who told her she would soon be pregnant with the Saviour. She must have experienced a flood of emotions.
This poem is Part 4 of 10 parts to the poetic script that follows the Christmas Story from the very beginning to the end.
Poem: Mary
An angel of God named Gabriel
Was sent from the presence of God
At a pivotal time in history
With THE great message of victory.
The arrival of Jesus the Saviour
The king of kings and Lord of lords
God’s only Son will leave His heavenly home
To live on earth as one of us.
Mary, a very young teenager
A virgin engaged to be married
Lived a simple godly life
In a small hillside township.
Though poor in worldly wealth
She was rich in love for God
At such a young age, her knowledge was great
Of God’s Holy Word and her family’s faith.
The angel stopped Mary, he stood before her
As she went about her daily chores
“Mary, do not be afraid,
By grace, God has chosen you today.”
To which she thought “Why choose me?
I’m just a peasant girl
I don’t deserve this personal word
And visit from an angel of God?”
“You will conceive and give birth to a son
And you shall name Him Immanuel
For He will live among his people
And save them from the penalty of sin."
The angel continued to say
To the stunned and humbled girl
“He will become the king who will reign forever
And His kingdom will never end.”
“How can this be, for I am a virgin?”
And the angel explained to her,
“The Holy Spirit will come on you
And God’s power will overshadow.”
“Your elderly cousin, Elizabeth
Who is beyond childbearing age
Has conceived a son and is pregnant six months
Nothing is impossible for God.”
Mary knew of God’s plan to one day send
A new king to save all people
For it had been predicted by God's prophet
Seven hundred years earlier.
Mary said "I am your loyal servant
My life is in your hands
May it happen to me as you have said."
And then God's angel disappeared.
Down through the ages
God's people had waited and prayed
For the long-awaited Saviour
Now with a glimpse of the day and hour.
