This book was given to me as a gift and I was at first reluctant to read it -- thought it would be a downer book about death -- but I was absolutely surprised to find the pages so full of hope and even humor that I couldn't put it down! The author offers us a journey not only into her own experience, but into the global human experience of resilience. I am grateful for this book -- it itself is a sign of life and love.

Saved By Kindle

This book offers a fascinating and in-depth look at hummingbirds and hummingbird rescue operations in Hollywood California. It is funny, fact filled and brimming with quirky insights about life in southern California. It's as much about the rescuers as the birds they are trying to help. But, believe me, you will learn a great deal about the birds too.

My problem lies in the narration. The voice is hard to describe--sort of Valley Girl meets Betty Boop. It grates from the start and then becomes intolerable after an hour for me. Somehow the narrator makes everything the author has to say seem trite and just plain stupid. Enter my Kindle. It turns out I purchased the whisper-sync when I bought the book. I don't usually do this unless it is some sort of deal/cheaper offer. Hum. Thank goodness I did because it has really paid off. I was easily able to switch over to reading instead of listening and the book was saved for me.

Be sure to listen to the sample to decide if the narrator will be ok for you. Be aware that if I was rating just the audio recorded version my rating would have been all one stars. The higher stars rated here for story and overall are for the Kindle version only. Good book--terrible narration.

Surprisingly engaging & informative!

I love hummingbirds, but part of me thought I was crazy for choosing to listen to almost 13 hours of a book about them. Now I know I would be crazy NOT to recommend this book to other people!!

Terry has a mastery of prose that is pleasant to listen to, and her stories about her rescued hummingbirds are moving, shocking, surprising, and super engaging.

Great message, shaky delivery

Overall, I really liked the message of this book and it was pretty funny. Of course we shouldn't discriminate against any particular group. That being said, it is hard to hear someone who grew up in Palm Springs, was Ivy League educated, and spent summers in Paris criticizing other people for privilege. The lack of this acknowledgement gives the book some whiny undertones.

Also I am not quite sure who the best audience for this book is. I chose it because I like female comedians, but I did not need to be won over or convinced not to be hateful. The Muslim people that I know would find this book offensive. The people I know that would find this book funny are already in agreement with not hating anyone. I am not sure this book would be well received by the people whose minds it wants to change.

The most annoying thing about this audiobook are the endless references to the PDF, which you can't see.

I'm a 50 year old tennis pro/corporate geek and father of a nationally ranked junior player. A buddy of mine turned me onto this title and I've got to say this is one of the most well written, entertaining and thought provoking tennis books I've ever read. If you're new to tennis, stopped playing and considering playing again, or a tennis bum, this book will inspire and motivate you to get back onto the courts. What made it especially enjoyable to me was the humility shown by the author, his writing style, acquired knowledge of the game and the people he describes. I also learned a few things! And most importantly I'm playing tennis today because of this.

Compelling, but missing something deeper

3.5 stars. I finished this book and am conflicted in how I feel about it. The writing itself is evocative and interesting, but sometimes feels overwrought. The subject matter (a sort of wandering exploration of how a murder impacts a family, the course of a trial, how certain events intersected with the author's life at the time) is obviously serious and compelling. Nelson's maternal aunt was murdered in the late 1960s (before Nelson was born), and her murder was thought to be committed by a serial killer. However, around 2004, a DNA match was found and a different person implicated. Nelson had finished a book of poetry that integrated her late aunt's own journal entries and Nelson's own impressions of her aunt and was closing in on her publication date when news of the reinvigorated investigation reached her. This book is largely Nelson's musings on her own life during this time period, memoir of some of her life growing up, and her impressions during and after the trial. I kept listening, and it was gripping, but at times I felt like a voyeur, at others Nelson's own recounting felt gratuitous (leaving the reader with the impression that she was focused on shocking or being particularly incisive, and not merely being honest). There are interesting insights throughout and some important points made (including our national appetite for shows depicting heinous crimes, and the disproportionate value we place on pretty, white deaths as opposed to the deaths of brown people), but these are in passing and only briefly discussed, leaving the reader to finish the book feeling like something was missing and an opportunity for a deeper book was left unrealized.

Ruined by the reader.

Maggie Nelson has a vibrant mind and is a good writer. Unfortunately the reader of this book is all smugness and distorts the voice which is everything in a work like this. Read the Argonauts. Or listen to Nelson read it herself. Not smug. Not arch. A great book, The Argonauts.

Narration was rushed

The narrator needed to pause more at the end of each section and then after giving the title of the next section. It all ran together.

Ice Water in the Veins

The written narrative by Richthofen is choppy and in some places disconnected--but what do you expect? He wasn't a writer and his superiors ordered him to put something down for use as propaganda. He chose to write about some personal memories of the war up to that time. It is odd to hear them in his own words. What strikes a reader/listener today is how matter-of-fact Richthofen was about death and dying. He was all fatalism devoid of emotion. One wonders how much was training and war experiences as opposed to personal attributes? The human-ness of who he was killing doesn't seem to have bothered him, nor are deaths of his own comrades related with any emotion. The autobiography by the great French ace, Rene Fonck, has some of these qualities, although Fonck was a vengeance killer while Richthofen was not. Shortly after publishing his book Richthofen was wounded in the head and survived. Worth listening to if you know who the Red Baron was.

If you could sum up Al Capone and His American Boys in three words, what would they be?

This audiobook is based on the memories and experiences of the wife of Gus Winkler, an American gangster who headed a Prohibition-era criminal gang specializing in armed robbery, murder and racketeering. Winkler was an associate of Chicago mob boss Al Capone and according to the author, was one of the men responsible for the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

This audiobook is informative, entertaining and well-written. It is told through the eyes of Winkler's wife, who was widowed when her husband Gus was murdered in 1933 by Italian gangsters who rose to power after Capone was jailed (these men wanted Winkler's portion of the enterprise). Although custom dictated that Winkler's wife would be provided for by the Syndicate upon her husband's death, every last penny ended up being taken/stolen from her by the Syndicate.

I very much enjoyed this audiobook-because of the characters as well as the historical content.

Old autobiography, FBI reports & historic research

The discovery of Georgette Winkeler's expose on the organised crime of the 1920's and 30's provides some interesting first hand accounts of the events. The book covers the period from first meeting her husband through to after his death and her "getting out" from the business.

It mainly focuses on her husband and his dealings, as these are what she knows best. If you are looking for details about Capone, this isn't the book as he is mostly on the periphery, but it does give you a good understanding of how the organised crime of the period worked.

The editor/author, William Helmer, has done good work providing a complete package.

An adventure that relates

When you have a chance to live through someone else's eyes, it is a privilege . I feel like I know Gwyn and Andrew as people now, not just characters. While this is not meant to be an epic saga, I thoroughly enjoyed the glimpse into bush life, into an honest life choice and the rewards, and the challenges overcome that all adventurers and entrepreneurs share.

Enjoy this story as it takes you to Africa and a moment in time that I think we might all long for: a chance at a new life and an old one left behind. I thoroughly enjoyed the escape to the Okavango.

amazing adventure!

loved every exciting moment of this book. the story had a flow that brought you from obstacle to the next. the relationships they had with the people in the camp were all at once endearing, lovable, frustrating, and humorous.

Couldn't get Past Charlotte Doerr

I wanted to like this book... but I had a very hard time with the female narrator's pronunciations and over-the-top annunciations.

By all accounts this book itself is well done, but I think i'll need to read the ebook to get this same experience.

Really very entertaining.

I felt like I was with them on this great adventure. A magical time in their life. I wanted it to go on forever. I'm pleased at how it turned out.

Great story

Enjoyed the story, getting lost in the characters and places! It made me long for travel and want to meet many of the characters myself. However, Charlotte's narration definitely made it challenging. She exaggerates the pronunciations of words to the extreme, making it sound forced vs natural. Every time it was her chapter I would picture her sitting in a booth recording the story instead of being transported into the story (fortunately she only read every other chapter). Despite that distraction, I would definitely recommend!

I recommend this for everyone- to live on a higher level - to really live.

A crazy, inspirational woman!

I am a Nyad groupie, so this was a must-listen for me. Nyad telling her own story is key to this book, I think. Even though I have followed all of her attempts on-line, and seen the video of her finish several times, hearing her read about this moment still made me teary. Nyad is the most impressive example I know, other than Holocaust survivors of putting mind over matter and staying focused on your goals. Onward!

This is one of the most amazing stories Ive ever listened to! It inspired me to keep living life to the fullest and to not give into doubt. If you need a good story that will kickstart your inertia this is it! I loved the fact that Diana narrated it herself. It made it an even more personal account.

Can a dude like this book?

Can a dude like this book? A lot of my reviewing friends have been chanting this book's praises saying it is one of the best they've read this year. Most of these folks are women. Actually, all of them. I wanted to know what's so special about Beryl Markham (whom I never heard of) and her life in Africa 100 years ago. Seriously, what gives?

This summary answers that question. So part of it, yes, is about a woman in African breaking all the rules of what women were supposed to be. Okay. However, what I'm learning through this summary is that Paula McLain, the book's author, is a huge draw to what makes this book so special. Not only is her writing style great "vivid descriptions of exotic locales, grand adventure, and sweeping romance" but the themes she includes are powerful--even for a "dude" to appreciate.

McLain uses experiences throughout the book to illustrate many themes, most in particular that of freedom. More poignantly, there is an episode of Beryl with "Paddy the lion". (Remind you of any recent headlines?) The author also references the freedoms of Africa itself, in turning from British East Africa to the colony of Kenya. But don't worry, it's all outlined here in the summary.
