Life changing

I am still thinking about this book. Part adventure, part detective story. I cannot believe the author did the things that she did- I am amazed. And grateful. Everyone should read/ listen to this book. The narrator sounds like she could be the author, which makes it feel even more as if you are there. If after listening to this book you don't agree that more has to be done about the way we treat animals in the meat and poultry industries then you don't have a soul.

Project Animal Farm was truly amazing. It's the story of a courageous woman who risks her life to uncover the truth about the conditions of the animals we eat. It's a story that needed to be told.

changed my life

I love this book immensely. The author's use of imagery and analogy created a picture in my mind that made me feel as if I had visited and seen and smelled the things she saw and smelled. the narrator was skilled in using tones and dialects from the characters mentioned, making the listening experience that much more enjoyable.

While the author may have had a few close calls in his career, he makes himself out to be a super spy. Consider this book fiction with a few stories embellished.

Read about the author prior to buying this book, it puts a whole other perspective on the stories it contains.

What a load of malarkey.

I started listening to this book and after chapter one I could tell things didn't add up. The further I got in the book the more full of crap the author seemed to be. I couldn't stomach the whole book, and decided to look into this guy. Low and behold he is full of crap ever his co-workers said so.

What made the experience of listening to Wide-Open World the most enjoyable?

This author has a gift for picking out moments in life that are really captivating. And his here-and-there tour of the world made for plenty of material. Some moments are about culture-shock, other moments are just about dealing with the bumpy road of life. Others have to do with the hard work of good relationships. In enjoyed of these moments, and I appreciated his polished narrative to the point of envy. I will probably gift this book to my sister at some point and also read it all over again myself.

Great concept! Great stories! when do we leave?!

Enjoyed the story and hearing of all the places this family went. Enjoyed the humor of the way the father told of it all. The information about how to practically pull this off was good and hopefully I can validate if it's really useful in planning my own trip someday.

I looked forward to listening each day to hear the next part of the story. I liked the way it was broken down. Maybe a little more imagery would have been nice but the stories did have enough detail to get me tearing up a few times at the emotion of this family and their experience. What an awesome concept to serve and show your children. what an experience for anyone at any age. No doubt this trip changed them all but for the kids what a gift from their parents... their minds and their hearts opened to so much more now.

I would love to take the advice and unplug and head out... and like he said there is never a perfect time so I just have to make my decision and go!

Would you listen to My Battle Against Hitler again? Why?

Yes. In fact I have listened to several sections twice already. There is so much content that one listen is not enough to truly absorb it all.

I found myself really pondering my values and asking if I believe in them enough to hold fast to them no matter the cost.

Prophetic

D. Van hildebrand was a philosopher and a catholic. His warnings about Hitler and his regime began in the 1920s and 30s, he recognized the nature of the threat and vigorously spoke out against the inevitable outcome of Naziism. His well articulated philosophy and his ability to see what was coming is both eerie and enlightening. His chronicle of Hitler's rise to power is unique in that he saw and warned humanity about the inevitable consequences of what he called 'nationalist socialism'. His understanding of the decadence and blindness that allowed Hitler to come to power has a lot to teach us today.

amazing book what in site I loved every second.

A great presentation. I listened to it twice back to back. I fear for our nation. There are so many similarities in the direction America going. I feel this book was written as a warning for our time.

Food for thought

Dietrich von Hildebrand doesn't tell a good story. He is too factual, but assumes that the reader knows a good deal about Austrian politics in the 1930's, so there are several holes in the story for a newcomer to his history. However, the journal articles included at the end provide excellent food for thought.

Most of the book is a biography emphasizing Von Hildebrand's fight against Nazism.The last two hours or so are actual excerpts of his articles he wrote arguing against Nazism at a dangerous time to do so.

A very true Memoir

This was a very good audiobook and the narrator was perfectly chosen for it. I have a great uncle who was killed at Vimy Ridge - his body was never found - not unlike the principal character in this book, and my grandfather lost his arm at the Lens in 1917. I've long been very interested in the First World War and I made my own visit to the battlefields of the First World War in May 2009, likely a similar time of year when the author made his trip.

The author recounts in a very similar to one that has gone through mine many times, albeit mine would be from a Canadian perspective. I don't nit pick on historical accuracy but generally I think he was right on the mark. This is about a personal sojourn, and piecing together the story of a young soldier's experiences through diaries and letters of those who also served at the front, for those of us 90+ years in the future.

At times it was very emotional - like his visit to Ypres and the Menin Gate - because it so closely mirrored my own; and at other times it was interesting, absorbing you in a story that is not new to you, but still fascinating.

So much has been written about the First World War, and so little is new. This isn't new - there are many similar accounts out there.

Compelling and Enlightening

Chris Tomlinson covers almost two centuries of Texas and human history in "The Remarkable Story of Two Families who Share the Tomlinson Name - One White, One Black." He mines an immense variety of documents to provide objective history. He also mines his own subjective life story and the stories of the slave-descended family that also has had the Tomlinson name. From his experiences as a reporter in Africa and the Middle East, he develops a theory of the connections between power and bigotry and on the need for truth as a basis for any reconciliation. This is needed to end the mythology that the powerful use to justify or ignore exploitation of others.

The writing ranges from precise presentation of history to narratives of the lives of white and black Tomlinsons. It interweaves among historical chapters and narrative chapters from several perspectives. Tomlinson's writing is consistently compelling.

I personally relate to his epilogue in which he faces honestly white privilege, something that people claiming that "we are now post-racial" deny. As a fit, clean-cut, old white man, I can pretty much go anywhere and not be questioned. During a morning run in Waikiki, if I need to use a bathroom, I can go into any hotel lobby and find the men's room and no one questions me. On the rare instances that I have been stopped (and with reason) for sliding through a stop sign or driving over the speed limit, the officer always has treated me with dignity and often let me by with a courtesy citation. Tomlinson convincingly shares that the privilege that he and I take for granted is not a shared experience for most people of color.

Finally, I do not usually take the time to review books that I read.

Enthralling, I couldn't stop listening.

The Russian Revolution was a part of world history I was not overly knowledgeable about, and found fascinating from the viewpoint of the Imperial Family. Meticulously researched and wonderfully written, and performed with such empathy never crossing over to melodrama. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.

Made you want to change the ending

It took me a little bit to get into this book but once I did I was hooked. The bad thing about reading a book about the Romanovs is you know the ending and this book endeared me to the family and I really wanted it to end differently.

These girls were very sheltered and this book didnt feel like it concentrated on just the girls, its a story about the entire family. Really what else can you say, everyone knows the story but to get some of these intimate details was interesting. And even though you know the ending it is still so sad!

I am a huge fan of Xe Sands and while I did enjoy her narration it felt different than other books I have listened to by her, not bad, just different to me , that may be because its a different genre Im not sure. I felt like this had been sped up compared to the way Xe usually reads.
