The Long Summer becomes the defining moment of a life.

The summer before she heads off to College looks long and bleak for Sophie Cunningham after her parents insist that she stay with her Great-Grandmother. Without her boyfriend, her friends, or worse, the internet. Scrap the boyfriend. He pitched a fit at her âchoosingâ to go stay with family.

Grandma Mary, dying of cancer, has come home from her prolonged stay in a nursing home to finish out her life in her Georgian Mansion. The family gathers round like vultures waiting to dine on the scraps of a finished life.

Things start to look up when she meets Sam, the estate Gardnerâs son. Everything that her boyfriend wasnât, Sam has a familial tie to the family that has looked after the estate for Maryâs family for generations.

This book is really slow to start. Seriously though, hang in there, it does get better, and you do get hooked. Honest. Grandma Mary starts spilling her secrets and encouraging Sophie to follow her true lifeâs passion â writing. What she discovers is the story of a passionate young girl who lived her life long ago and the loss of a soul-deep love due to the manipulations of her wealthy upper class parents. He was a man not of their class, and not of her parents choosing.

I cried when I realised Grandma Maryâs true loss, and also that of another woman, manipulated into marrying Maryâs love by her parents. Those two women eventually represented the real life love that the husband, chosen for Mary by her parents, really did feel for her. In fact, I can imagine this story represents many of the wealthy women for that period of time, and Iâm thankful Iâve had the freedom to make the choices I have.

This is a sweet and occasionally emotional story. It is also about finding your lifeâs direction and true love, and having the courage to act on it. We forget to appreciate the elderly and the stories of their lives. They were precious children, lovers and were loved, and were then the parents and grandparents that we see now. We canât appreciate their childhood dreams and teenage passions because we werenât there, but, if we set quietly and listen, we then just might.

delicately poised issue of boredom and midlife crisis housewives face and suffer

This is a book out of a closet. The suffocation of modern lives in misfit marriages and denial of individuality to women and children as well as lack of sympathy for men's in curable impotency and consequent culpability of marriage is the text of this narrative. The subtext of desires, liaisons and licenses are dealt,with perhaps a little insensate manner, is appalling and appealing given your own predelictions. Slotting of sentiments into relationships is the climax of the plot and unraveling the centrifugal personal propensities is the anti-climax. The climax appears to be a little judgemental even if the style is clinical or judgemental. It is a book about boredom in routine and relationships that no exciting sexual or otherwise gossip diversion can alleviate. The anticlimax of break up is the best solution to the narrative's climax that has been worked out. The readers may not share the authoress' own moral pallete.

Racy and entertaining

Full of insights about women. Highly recommended for men. It will help them understand women. Will give courage to women.

Best read of 2014

Scandalous Housewives by Madhuri Banerjee is a story about family, friends, relationships and of course housewives who become friends. A book that brings to life the very famous quote, "Friends are family you choose for yourselves".

Madhuri's ability to make the reader feel like a part of the story is commendable.

Character buildup is brilliant. By the end of the book the reader feels like a part of the "Lovey Ladies" group. They have become your friends wherein you actually feel their pain, rejoice in their triumphs and want to give them a hug for being so strong and taking control of their lives.

Kudos to you for bringing out the emotions so eloquently and weaving them into a part of the lives of the readers.

The sex scenes in the book are hot and enhance the story line. Gives just the right amount of oomph to the story without it becoming overbearing or vulgar.

All in a all a great book, keeps u enthralled right up to the very end.

What a treat!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Most definitely recommended! A very rich story that pokes and prods around in a deliciously candid way. Very enjoyable read / listen.

What other book might you compare Notes from an Exhibition to and why?

Any book that is dense with character dissection. Any story spanning across at least two lifetimes. Any good piece of fiction that forces you to think.

Which scene was your favorite?

Did not have a favorite scene. I liked learning the individual characters from different perspectives.

If you could rename Notes from an Exhibition, what would you call it?

I'm afraid Pictures at an Exhibition is already taken. Pause pause

I would not rename it. The title is aptly chosen.

Yes! I love Joan Walker's narration and she has quickly become a favorite to listen to. I inhale audiobooks and she is a gem. I like her cadence and ability to know and understand the characters. Again, highly recommended!

Who Was Perran?

Before I say anything else about this eerie novella that has just appeared on the 2016 Man Booker longlist, let me confess: I have no idea what the title means, even after finishing the book. But I have not much idea what the rest of it means either. It started simply enough, when a young man, Timothy, comes to take an abandoned cottage in a run-down fishing village, hoping to fix it up before being joined by his girlfriend. There are strong hints of Gothic, in the inhospitable nature of the place, and the Straw Dogs way the locals form up against the incomer. Or of environmental dystopia, as it becomes clear that the waters are poisoned, the rare catches are confined to strange mutated fish and jellies, and a cordon of empty container ships marks off a no-go zone offshore.

But as the story progressesâslowly at first, very slowlyâother elements come in. Timothy's cottage is known locally as Perran's, even though this Perran has been dead ten years. Try as he might, Timothy can find little about him. Was he old or young, a village leader or a preternaturally wise child? What was his special relationship with Ethan, a local fisherman who acts almost as though he has lost a son or lover, and blames himself for Perran's death. Is there hatred, envy, or grudging kinship in Ethan's relationship with Timothy, on those occasions when he takes him out his boat? Who is the woman in gray, who appears with her henchmen whenever a catch is brought in?

I tend not to like the use of dreams in novels, and there are a lot of them here. There are also long flashback sections in italics. At least they seem like flashbacks, but as you read on you discover that the relationship of the various time-periods is not always what you assumedâand further that the distinction between dream and straight narrative is not so clear either. Eventually, Menmuir will bring in some episodes that seem to have a different kind of reality, leading perhaps to other theories of what the book was about.

Playing superhero/ wirewalker in his head while the real world is hell

Fourteen year old Claraence is surrounded by family and friends that are leading him down the path of drug dealing, dog fights and other illegal activity. His mother died in from of him in his home in a drive-by shooting and he is trying to do right by her memory while trying to survive in his neighborhood, a wirewalk. He loves school and gets good grades and lives in his fanasty world where he is a wirewalker or a superhero, to give him courage to do what he needs to do. A teacher at his school, a corner store owner, and his "bodyguard" are his guardian angels, trying to help him down the right path. But reality hits, breaking his fanasty world and forces him to see what could be lost if he does not act. Because he cannot remain a wirewalker forever...

Clarence's story drew me in and the "what happens next" kept me turning the pages. It made me think about what I would do in his shoes and how his life seemed almost set out for him with few choices to make. It seemed like the ending was abrupt and left a lot of loose ends, which was the only thing I did not like about the book.

I rated a book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Gripping read!

I would recommend this book to adults as well as young adults. Having lived in D.C. And Richmond, as well as several other cities, it was especially gripping to read this and learn the tough roads some young people must navigate just to survive, let alone thrive. Kudos to Mary Lou Hall for such an in depth, riveting, and heart wrenching, heartwarming journey.

Heartachingly beautiful story

Wow... This book was truly incredible. It was a serious perspective-changer for me. Clarence is such a good kid. A kind-hearted, animal-loving, straight A student who is set up by his circumstances for complete failure. But he uses his instincts to survive. He knows who is angels are in the community, and he uses them to balance himself as he finds himself in a life he cannot stomach.

It's hard to read at times, because it feels so real. So heartbreaking. So many times, as the reader, I found myself thinking "Isn't there anyone who can help? Why doesn't he call the police?" etc, but I know he couldn't have.

Healing, trauma, and family

Instaread distills this novel into a short read. This review summarizes the book and brings out its best parts. There is a summary of the story, analysis of the characters, and insight on the themes. I especially loved the section about generosity, which talked about how the sisters received plenty of generosity from everyone else, but not from each other. Sometimes its easy to forgive strangers, but not our family. I was given a copy of this book to review.

Loved It!!!

Escapism at its best!! It had everything ....... drama; passion; love; hate and romance. A classy story that took the reader around the world too. This is the first time I have read Tasmina Perry. It won't be the last.

The story was beautifully narrated by Gemma Whelan - I would most certainly recommend this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

this was a great holiday book! it was nothing too challenging but a great escape and it definitely made me want to visit Savannah.
