This is clearly a children's book, and a very engaging one. I listened to this book in audio format, downloaded from Audible.Com. I was given guest access to it by the invitation of the wonderful narrator, Mil Nicholson. I could listen to her voice forever!

The book is well-written, believable, and beautifully narrated by Nicholson. Whitehead tells the story of three children whose English city lives are disrupted by WW2--and also by the tough events in life which do not cease just because there's a war on. The children have been transplanted to the countryside to avoid the bombing expected in the city. Here they land in the home of a reluctant caregiver, a recently widowed mother of one young son.

I cared about all the characters, and I looked forward to listening to the book on my daily walks. Rating it as a book for children, I give it five stars. As a book for adults, it merits four.

Highly recommended as a read-aloud for parents or caregivers of children 6 to 10 years old.

Callie and Rebecca are not in this story. There is some massive mistake.

I am confused. The audiobook has no relation to the reviews. Somehow two different books with similar titles are being lumped together here. The story recorded is about British children during World War 2. The reviews are about something entirely different. I know, because I narrated the story.

Interesting idea of what might happen

What made the experience of listening to The Squadron Executive the most enjoyable?

Well the story flowed really well together however it was hard to be completely believable. I mean it is a work of fiction but there were some parts where I thought that wouldn't happen in real life.

What other book might you compare The Squadron Executive to and why?

This is my third book by the author. I do like that his books aren't drawn out but they get right down to the point. Its great for a short listen.

Brilliant listen.

I very much enjoyed the whole story. liked the history of days gone by. Most with the exception of one character.

A twist that I never knew was coming.

Definitely recommend and want to listen to more stories by the author and narrator too.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great story and really well read. I had very little knowledge of the English in Ireland until I read this yet my family are Irish and Anglo Irish. It is very moving. I bought a copy and then another on kindle and then on audible so I could read it again and switch between the two when I was driving.

What did you like best about this story?

The historical detail is exceptional. I loved all of it even though some of it made me cry. It is an incredibly moving book.

What about Laurence Kennedys performance did you like?

I thought he did all the accents and voices really, really well. Particularly Kate's American lilt.

Get it on all devices. You will appreciate it in very different ways on paper, electronic and audio.

Cannot say - perhaps someone who has no idea of regional accents or who is not bothered by the fact that they are wrong.

Would you be willing to try another one of Laurence Kennedys performances?

No as I thought that the story was totally spoilt for me by his narration. I do not believe his accents were good - and his Geordie accent was abominable. He even mispronounced Alnwick!

Mediocre

Although I have great respect for anyone that writes books, and the narrator I thought was excellent, I have to say this book is more an account of the ups and downs of an Anglo Irish family over time than a gripping novel. I especially enjoyed the parts about training in Ireland and the UK and about the beginnings of the IRA and Michael Collins but the rest was almost as if the author had made it up as he went along. I'm sure lots of people will love it though, it just wasn't my cup of tea...
