Great Story, Interesting Setting...

If you could sum up The Winter Palace in three words, what would they be?

Fantastic story set amongst the lavish Russian aristocracy

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book, as a previous review said, stick with the narrator because the accent will add to the story bringing with it a feel of actually listening to Varvara telling the story. The ficklness of the Empress and the Naivety of the young Catherine when she enters the Russian arena are good contrasts and it was good to see how she developed and grew. Such a wonderful story.

Captivating and beautiful

A beautifully told story, rich in detail. I'm always fascinated by political intriguing and this is basically the whole premise of the story. I struggled a little due to the complexity of the names but the central characters are the only ones that really matter.

The narrator takes a wee while to get used to - her accent, intonation and pausing isn't what I'd normally expect and it almost put me off but once you tune in it adds to the beauty of the story.

Publisher's Summary:

Sheriff Kyle of Deadeye, Nevada, is headed east to the nations capital. Like Dennis Weaver in the television series McCloud, Kyles about to discover that the law can be even wilder in the big city than in the Wild West. Its a fact that hits home when hes the one accused...of murder. Kyles come to the city to give a report to his senator on the misdeeds of Nevadas filthy rich copper kings. But before he has a chance, hes knocked unconscious, later coming to alongside his senator - now dead, with Kyles knife imbedded in the corpse. Welcome to Washington D.C., where corruption, intrigue, and murder are all in a days work.

Kyles got no alibi, no memory, and apparently doesnt have a prayer...unless he can find a way to outwit, outfox, and outmaneuver the masters of deception and double-crosses.

Much like Kyle, L. Ron Hubbard was born and bred on the western frontier and made his way east to explore and experience life in Washington, D.C. But unlike the sheriff, Hubbard enjoyed his time in the capital, where he went to college at Georgetown. He came to know the ins and outs of the city as well as he knew the arroyos and canyons of the west, giving him the kind of insights he needed to write stories like "Killers Law". Also includes the mysteries "They Killed Him Dead", in which a respected homicide detective solves a murder several times over, only to be proved wrong again and again, to the amusement of his fellow cops; "Mad Dog Murder", the story of a patrol officer who dreams of joining the homicide squad, and finds that the ticket to advancement - and romance - may be a Pekinese dog; and "The Blow Torch Murders", in which every criminal in town is eager to turn himself in...and the reason is a real killer.

Sheriff in a Frame

Killer's Law (Stories from the Golden Age)

Once upon a time, it was not necessary to have a huge box in your living room, and all the chairs and couches in your living room did not have to point at that box. You could see the pictures in your head, using the magic of actors and sound effects. You didn't have to stop everything you were doing just because your favorite shows were coming on, and in fact so many women (most women didn't work outside the home in those days) did those portions of their housework involving soap and hot water during those shows that the shows came to be known as soap operas. For the men, whose work was more structured, the stories were put into cheap magazines that didn't last long. That was pulp fiction. The 1930s and 1940s were the age of soap operas and pulp fiction. I, for one, miss them. But it was very difficult for a writer of pulps to make a living, because they paid about a penny a word.

One man licked the system. He wrote from 75,000 to 100,000 words per month and he sold almost everything he wrote, fresh off the typewriter on rolls of butcher paper so he didn't have to stop and change sheets of paper, without editing or rewriting. His name was L. Ron Hubbard, but this was before he invented Scientology, and he perched on the New York Times Book Review's Best Seller List very often. But even that record was a fiction, because in fact he would write umpteen stories for one magazine in one month, and they would be written under umpteen different pen names.

Two Western Romances!

While audiobooks have been around for decades, I didn't really start listening to these types of books until I was introduced to the Stories from the Golden Age series from Galaxy Press. This series features the short stories from the 1930s and 1940s by author L. Ron Hubbard. Galaxy Press has been adapting these stories into audiobooks for a whole new generation to enjoy. The stories are also being released on Kindle and paperbacks.

The western audiobook Tinhorn's Daughter was released just a few a months back and features the voices of Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson), Corey Burton, R.F Daley, Jim Meskimen (who also directs) and Tait Ruppert. The two-disc audiobook also features the short story When Gilhooly Was In Flower.

Tinhorn's Daughter first appeared in the December 1937 issue of Western Romances and centers on a man named Sunset Maloney, who is trying to fight back against the cruel land-stealer Slim Trotwood in the Big Sky country of Montana. While Slim may look like just another gambler, he has been stealing the Puma Pass lan from the homeowners. Sunset is known for his fast shooting and he plans on taking Slim down that is until he meets the tinhorn's daughter, Betsy. Now blinded by love for his enemy's daughter, his trail for justice will be a lot harder than he thought it would be.

When Gilhooly Was In Flower was originally titled Robin Hood Of The Range and first appeared in the August 1938 issue of Romantic Range. The story centers on Jigsaw Gilhooly, a man who is deeply in love with the schoolteacher Mary Ann. He wants to propose to her, but it seems he isn't romantic enough like the men in the books that Mary Ann reads.

Publisher's Summary:

As a lieutenant in the US Marine Corps - as handsome and cocky as Richard Gere - Michael Stuart was once considered an officer and a gentleman. But thats all changed. Now hes seen as a renegade, a traitor, and a thief. Stuart is a man without a country...and perhaps without a prayer. Why? Because in a daring plot to foil the Japanese puppet regime in China, he set out to reinstate the countrys true emperor. Known now as The Red Dragon, Stuart is a soldier of fortune in war-torn Manchuria - and a man of honor in a world of treachery. Stuarts latest adventure takes him from Peking to the Great Wall and beyond. Hes in a race against time and against the Japanese super-spy known as the Hell-Cat, both of them in hot pursuit of an elusive black chest. For Stuart, the ultimate prize is one filled with mystery, power, and treasure - not only in the chest itself, but in the love of the beautiful woman who has sent him on this mission....

It was on Hubbards second journey to East Asia that he met British Secret Service agent, Major Ian MacBean, who introduced him to "The Great Game", the geopolitical tug-of-war between China, Japan, and Britain. Hubbard also learned of the trade in stolen Chinese treasures, and was exposed to the secret criminal society known as The Red Dragon - inspiring this story of the same name. He has captured a singular time in this storied land.

Hubbard delivers a tidy finale that shows why he was one of the most popular genre writers of his generation. Publishers Weekly

Robin Hood Meets Zorro Hero

In between my longer reads, I like being able to toss in a little something else to mix it up.

Something short and attention grabbing that breaks me away from my usual read before starting another.

Which is why I like the pulp fiction stories by L. Ron Hubbard.

The Red Dragon was a great, short read with a hint of mystery, action, and of course a little love.

I love that the characters are never fully defined so the tall, dark, and handsome Red Dragon reminds me sort of like Zorro... or Robin Hood. He's kind of the "steal from the rich to give to the poor" kind.

Ms. Sheldon was no lady either. She stepped right into the action without any hesitation that a typical woman may have in that era.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a fun read that I couldn't put down.

If you are looking to mix up your reading list a little bit, this is definitely one I would recommend checking out - it's short, fun, action packed with a bit of love (but not enough to be gushy) with a bit of handsome cowboy tossed in it!

Five Stars

Love listening to L Ron Hubbard's stories

Full of Suspense in far off lands

I received "The Red Dragon" through Library Thing Early Reviewers. "The Red Dragon" by L. Ron Hubbard is about Michael Stuart, a former U.S. Marine Corps officer. His career ended when after a failed attempt to return the Chinese Imperial Dynasty to power in 1930's Asia. Abandoned by his country he is unable to find a safe passage out of his China by land or sea.

Now Stuart, also known as the "Red Dragon" has a new occupation: he intervenes in matters for the good of the people. Stuart agrees to help a beautiful young woman search for a mysterious black chest which her father hid in Manuchuria before his death.

Publisher's Summary:

Tex Larimee is a grizzled Arizona sheriff whos leaving the deserts of Cactus County behind, blazing a trail east to mix it up with The Slickers in the canyons of Manhattan. Years later, Clint Eastwood would follow the exact same trail in Coogans Bluff - a western lawman on the loose in New York City. Texs welcome to New York is a rude one. Robbed of his cash, gun, and badge, hes locked in a room in back of a run-down bar. Breaking out of the bar, he goes looking for his best friendonly to find him dead, his throat cut. And the cops accuse Tex of committing the murder....

Much like Tex, L. Ron Hubbard was born and bred on the western frontier and made his way east to explore and experience life in New York City. But unlike the sheriff, Hubbard enjoyed his time in the city, where his writing career took off as he became a leading figure in its literary world. He came to know the streets and haunts of Manhattan as well as he knew the arroyos and canyons of the west, giving him the kind of insights he needed to write stories like "The Slickers". Also includes the mysteries "Killer Ape", in which a man frees a mistreated orangutan, only to end up with a monkey on his back, as hes accused of aiding and abetting the ape in a case of murder; and "Murder Afloat", the story of a top narcotics cop in the U.S. Secret Service whos pursuit of a million-dollar score could land him in some hot - and deadly - water. Strap on your six-gun and spurs and take a bite out of the Big Apple as the audio version of "The Slickers" mixes up Wild West action with big city suspense.

Crime/Suspense Thrillers from the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction!

Slickers

Like the Eastwood movie, Cooganâs Bluff, about an Arizona lawman who comes to take a prisoner back to Arizona, or a more recent TV show where Dennis Weaver, McCloud, a sheriff from New Mexico comes to New York City, so with L. Ron Hubbardâs western story, Slickers.

The Slickers are the city slickers from NYC and Tex, a sheriff from Arizona (or âArizonyâ as he puts it) comes to take his friend back home only to discover him dead, and a pickpocket who took all his money and possessions, and a man with a bowler hat who knows more than his saying.

Funny story as Hubbardâs sarcastic writing style criticizes the NYC police with their bumbling and worshiping protocol than actual police work. And Tex, who could not care less and goes out to find the murderer himself.

Recommended, even if you donât like westerns.

Murder Afloat is the second tale, about a Fed detective investigating a smuggling ring operation from Havana to the USA. Heâs on the SS Cubana, minding his own business when he receives a phone call from a mystery man.

Grossartig!!! Great!!

I have read this book, and it is one of those, you'll only close after you are done. I think it is crazy, though, only to have hardbacks available. Since this book is in german, I would suggest, go to amazon.de, order papberbacks for 9 Euro (only if you want a few books, cause of the shipping). I ordered there last year around christmas, and bought 8 or 9 paperback historical books like this one, and I only paid 14$ for shipping and handling. The weight of the Paket did not change the rate. So, rather buy 4 paperbacks, pay 14 shipping, and have 4 instead of one book.

The book has helped me to trust and deal with my LDR in a much better way, thank you very much for all the good advice.

Entertaining

I liked it, read it through nights, and it got me to look for more books about that time in Europe. Much nicer than reading history books.

Once again outstanding!

As my favorite author, Rebecca Gable researches everything she writes about in detail. As usual, this novel held my interest throughout. The author is not only a very knowledgable historian but also a most gifted writer who brings the past vividly to life. The reader will feel transported back in time becoming a witness to early German history. The novel is a wonderful historical account and will hold your attention throughout.

The Head of the World

Once again Rebecca Gabel has pealed away the veil of the Middle Ages and given insight into the lives and intrigues of those individuals so remote from our past but stillpart of our communal psyche, Well done!
