Wirklich empfehlenswert!

Thought it was non-fiction at first
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
It is a good story although I didn't need to hear quite so much about their sex lives lol ..........
What did you like best about this story?
The interactions both in and out of the Navy
Did John St Denis do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
    Yes ......................
    Any additional comments?
Even if you are a non-fiction guy like me I think you will enjoy this one. I wish it had more detail about their actual duties in the Navy day to day.

Chilling and with compelling hints of the supernatural, The Raven's Head is a triumph for Karen Maitland, Queen of the Dark Ages.
    Critic Reviews:
"A compelling blend of historical grit and supernatural twists" (Daily Mail)
    Members Reviews:
Darkly medieval - not for the faint hearted!
Would you try another book written by Karen Maitland or narrated by Jonathan Keeble?
Yes. Karen Mailtland's book are always fascinating and the social history very well observed. Jonathan Keeble's narration was excellent.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
A little less cruel. Many of the scenes were very upsetting and hard to listen to. It spoiled an otherwise good tale. Caution advised.
    Any additional comments?
Caution advised. Scenes of great suffering involving children. It took me out of y comfort zone.
    Good but not great
Enjoyable enough tosh but rather obvious twists in the plot made this less enjoyable than it might have been. However the author is really good at writing within a historical context.
    best ever maitland!!
the best Karen work of Karen yet! absolutely spellbinding, loved every second of it as I do all her work but this tops the lot!!
    Disappointing
We listened to this book on the back of company of liars. But it is defiantly no where near as good as that book. There are huge gaps in the plot and way too many unresolved issues with in the narrative.
    extremely depressing story.
I did persevere with this mistakenly thinking it would get better . VERY DARK story

Another good modern pulp from Mark Barnard. Quick, fun, light reading. (Some typos though). I've enjoyed all of his books to far especially his take on the 60's German Edgar Wallace movies. Wish he'd do more of those. Good job.

    character addiction.
I read Freya first which is a follow up to this book I believe and I was thrilled to find some of the same characters. I really enjoyed this book also and would highly recommend it.
    Brilliantly read
I liked it in the end. Took a while but it's brilliant. And lovely. And forgiving.
    Freya's poorer prequel
Bought this having listened to the marvellous 'Freya'. It's set 10 years earlier, maybe written 10 years earlier as it's a very different kettle of fish. Much more of a period whodunnit, glad I read Freya first (which is very highly recommended) as this would not have lured me in.
    struggled
struggled to stay interested. narrator was hammy and unnatural sounding. Not thrilled with this purchase

    Brilliant!!!
    Any additional comments?
I'd like to thank Lee from She-Wolf Reads for recommending this to me! I really enjoyed it and adored Lord and Lady Archer! I loved the story of Archer being cursed and being saved by Miranda, it definetly sampled the Beauty and the Beast story line but with a complete revamp and a little mixing of myths as it drew from Egyptian stories to explain how he came to be cursed.
I loved Miranda's ability and how she struggled to accept it. Archer and Miranda had great chemistry and truly accepted each other completely for all the other was. They were a perfect match for each other.
The villian for me was a mystery for much of the book, I suspected many differnt people but only really came to realise who the villian was for sure not long before Miranda figured it out. I'd suspected at an early syage but then with other characters I dismissed them as a suspect for the killings til near the end again!
I loved the main supporting characters as well, Euala, Gilford and Miranda's sisters. I was mixed about Ian, I didn't like him trying to steal Miranda and hurt Archer but it seemed conflicted in his actions himself and he had moments where I thought I could really like this character. I suspect he's getting the next book and I have to admit, it was hinted that he and Archer were friends as students before his father turned him against Archer and I'd like to see a reconciliation there.
I look forward to the rest of the series and would recommend this book!
Just what I'd been looking for!
    Any additional comments?
I wanted a light, easy to listen to, yet entertaining book (to listen to in bed when my brain has already gone to sleep), preferably with a supernatural or 'different' slant. However, I wanted it to have a great story, be intelligently and well written and be without any of the cheesy, explicit and frankly unsexy sex scenes often found in this type of book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Iberian Peninsula, 1809. French troops led by one of Napoleon's best generals are amassing on the border. Wellington's outnumbered force and his unreliable Spanish allies need to pick off the smaller French units if they are to stand their ground.
For that they need information: accurate intelligence on numbers, arms, and whereabouts. That's where Captain Keane and his company of reformed scouting officers are invaluable tools--despite being unpopular with the regular soldiers.
But it soon becomes apparent that someone high up in Wellington's headquarters is a spy for the French. Only someone able to travel widely outside the camp, someone privy to battle plans, could be the double agent--and Keane's enemies within the army are quick to point the finger. Keane must defend his crew against their accusers or root out the traitor himself.
Keane's Challenge draws a fascinating picture of a disparate group of men brought together in a Peninsular War adventure that sees maverick hero Keane ride again.

    A little more Keane
I am warming to this series and I found this book a more enjoyable read than the previous one. The characters are developing nicely and gaining depth while the story is largely well-paced and this time offers additional intrigue. It's important to note that this really isn't just "another Sharpe", Iain Gale has found a fascinating niche with his main character having gone from being a soldier of the line to a guide or intelligence officer. Spy to you and me.
This gives the author some considerable latitude for the plot of these books and I think it's fair to say that he pushes the bounds of that considerably more in this second volume. It's an entertaining book and given the variety of character backgrounds and accents David Timson does a very credible job.
It's not perfect though by any means and in pushing the boundaries the author does stretch credibility just a little too thin at times and I would like to have seen more time devoted to the major set piece battle.
If you do need high levels of realism this book delivers with some intriguing insights into the period, especially communications this time, but you will have to forgive the plot for perhaps skating on some pretty thin ice for much of the final quarter.
    the best
great read a good can't wait for decades short to one of the next one
No Sharpe, but his own man.
I was a little sceptical when I first began the series, as the format follows Sharpe quite closely. But after finishing this second instalment in the series, It's distinct enough to stand up to be a well worthwhile listen. The story moves along at a pace, the narrator is easy to listen to, and the characterisation of Keane and his men kept me interested.
    Recommend.
    Brilliant
Absolutely loved this book Well read and a great story. Keene is my new favourite hero
    Well read
I enjoyed this book due to the story send its connection with history. It was very well read and easy to listen to! Finished all too soon!

    Beautiful sad story
I'm not a fan of American women readers - they usually are too brash, to high pitched for my ears, but this was OK.
The story is well written, with good hooks along the way which are not explained but which lead the reader to the outcome of the story very well. The language is lovely, depicting time and place well. References to plants I'm not familiar with but which give the idea of a post war rural idyll with undeveloped countryside but also hard work for its agricultural inhabitants. But also of a backwater, ignorant and bigoted, where the lynch mob rules whether that is towards those with a birthmark who are deemed to be a witch, or of those of German ancestry who are deemed to be spies. Sadly one could make parallels with views held in some quarters about muslims today.
My first book by Ron Rash and mightily impressed by him as a story teller
    Slow-moving but vivid tragedy
A slow moving but vivid and sad tale depicting rural American life during World War I.
