A Darling Adventure

The close and loving family life of Alexa and her mom and dad reminds us of the story of another well-loved little girl: Laura in Little House on the Prairie. Modern day Alexa has something in addition - the friendship of two boys and two girls. Each child's name begins with a different vowel. The five "vowels" eagerly apply their bright and curious minds to delight each other with more and more challenging ideas and fun-filled activity. Alexa and her friends learn to listen, work together, build on one another's ideas, and react compassionately when one or another experiences personal problems. The friendships are truly enriching. As many home-schooled children come to know, one the of the great life-long learning skills is the ability to combine fun and academic rigor in a variety of settings. Alexa is really good at that as evidenced by one of her favorite quotes to think about - words from Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."

Wonderful Story for a Middle School Book Club

What a wonderful story! I read this book in one day because I didn't want to put it down. With the author's marvelous writing style I felt like I was really getting to know the characters in the book and wish I could meet them in real life. Furthermore, I'd like to live in Sundog where the story takes place! The author's way with words made the images from the story come alive in my mind, and the vocabulary used is extensive. This book would be perfect for a middle school book club because aside from the imagery there are a lot of interesting subjects to discuss in the story: school, being made fun of, moving, the elderly, being kind, trying something scary, making friends, and more. I also enjoyed reading Alexa's Lexicon: A Glossary of Words and Ideas That Spark Her Imagination (at the back of the book). I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Great story!

The Howling Vowels by Leslie Schultz is a wonderful story. I think anyone would enjoy it as much as I did. Reading it made me smile. The illustrations are very cute and go with the story.

exploration of anxiety nightmare

This story explores one version of the kinds of nightmares that insecure people have: going to school half-dressed, having to take a final exam for a course that you've never attended, showing up to a party on the wrong day. The anxious among us can relate to coming to school with the perfect crazy hair on the wrong day--picture day. The story uses humor and silliness to deal with the topics of embarrassment, friendship, and compassion. While the character's peers initially react like real kids would, with some good direction, they mitigate the little guy's embarrassment. If only we were all so lucky as to have this little guy's teacher and friends when we make a social mistake.

We love Big Books

My 4 year old granddaughter loves looking at it while in bed. Whenever she awakes at night, she pretends to read it. We love Big Books!!

This is an amazingly thoughtful book. The ending is a surprise and very heartwarming. My 7 year old grandchildren enjoyed this book. I think they related to the main character and learned a lesson as did the main character.
