cute story- easy read

These are great books for the begining reader who is ready for chapter books. Easy to follow stories that have make you want to read the next chapter to find out what is going to happen. It's funny that the princess doesn't like pink. Good for the girl who likes horses but not exactly a girly girl. I am so glad we stumble upon this series.

I found this to be one of the worst books I have ever listened to, I can't even be bothered to finish it. it's boring, at times completely stupid making no sense. & read in the same monotone voice that fails to add any life to the story. it felt like a tourture to listen to & I was regularly thinking up something else to do on the bus.

I definitely prefer Alfie to this Thomas the cat.

A lighter, happier take on Russian fairy tales

Firebird was a fun short listen. It's about an hour long and if you need it to entrance your own kids for about that amount of time it's very nice. :-)

Journey with two Russian-American kids into a slice of their own heritage, perhaps next time the kids will remember the instructions from their mysterious aunt...

What did you love best about Firebird: Adventure One?

Book 1 of the Firebird series is a special treat. Actress Rebecca Lea McCarthy gives a dramatic performance of this thrilling fairy tale/fantasy. McCarthys deliverance is much more than a narration. It is vocal acting that fits perfectly with the storyline which is perfect for young children and thrilling enough for adults. Imagine a portal to a fantasy realm complete with a mean witch and a beautiful and magical bird.

The combination of Julia Goussevas brilliant writing and the vivid portrayal of all the characters by Rebecca Lea McCarthy has created a wonderful and magical adventure.

Julia Goussevas writing is so real and natural, I look back when Im finished and it feels like the story was not written one word at a time but rather the story was just born and blossomed.

The kids and I enjoyed listening to this modern version of the Firebird, a Russian fairy tale. Their adventures into the magical land, their encounter with the Russian witch (Baba Yaga) and their search for the healing feather that would help their weird Aunt Karina were exciting. Rebecca Lea McCarthy did a fantastic job with all the different voices. We especially liked Aunt Karina and Baba Yaga, but all the voices are distinct and memorable. We hope the series continues!

What made the experience of listening to Firebird: Adventure One the most enjoyable?

The variations in the voice of the narrator made me perk my ears in anticipation for the next twist in the story.

This book is similar in theme to other books by the same author, Julia Gousseva, in that it delivers cultural themes with a tender care to the next generation, to children who may not have had the opportunity to absorb their Russian heritage and all the wonderful legends it encompasses. An example would be Lollipop by Julia Gousseva. I hope that this book, too, would be produced as an audiobook.

Kids face modern problems in spin on classic tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd definitely recommend that any parent, who has a child who might be facing some family conflict, pick up this book. Saucy carefully tries to protect herself and her brother from the dangers of her step-mother's drinking--but she struggles with figuring out how to get the help she needs to face those dangers. Lots of kids would be able to relate to the challenges of figuring out who to trust in times of crisis. Fortunately, the book ends on a hopeful note, after Saucy negotiates the help she needs.

What about Monica Clark-Robinsons performance did you like?

The narrator's voice perfectly opened up the nostalgic gingerbread building moment that begins this book. Saucy's voice was "saucy" and her little brother's voice was all boy. You can tell each character clearly, plus Clark-Robinson's overall classic tone suited the feel of the novel.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Saucy's heard the promises before, that her stepmother will quit drinking. So when Saucy opens the kitchen cupboard and finds that bottle of rum hidden in there, oh, my heart just went out to her. Here she was, faced with the evidence that her own house is not a safe place, and her powers to fix that were limited. It just made me want to rush into that house and rescue her. But that wouldn't be for Saucy. She's going to try to rescue herself and her brother.

Full of color and excitement, this book is a representative of a diverse perspective (Temple, Martinez, & Yokota, 2011, p. 141). I enjoyed the vibrant illustrations as I read about Chato preparing for his friend, Nova Boy, a surprise birthday party. Nova Boy had never had a celebration for his birthday. Actually, he did not even know for sure when he was born. Chato saw this as a great opportunity to get together with his party animals friends to throw a "pachanga" (Soto, 2000, p. 8). Light-hearted and humorous, this story moves swiftly as the illustrations take you deeper into the culture and traditions of the cats. Emotions, both sad and happy, are expressed so vividly as each character is drawn. You can't help but feel sorrow for Nova Boy, and ultimately, feel elated by his surprise that his friends would put so much effort into having a special party just for him. The true meaning of friendship and compassion is exceptionally highlighted in this story.

Wonderful book, a little like Hansel and Gretel

I love the stories and illustrations of William Steig, and I remembered this one from my childhood. They are wonderfully creative and whimsical. This one is about a pig who finds a magical talking bone in the woods, and it helps to save her from a hungry fox. Be aware that the storyline in this one is similar to Hansel and Gretel (slightly dark), so it might be better for your older kids.

Yet another kindle bait and switch...

The one star review is for the fact that after purchasing the kindle version I discovered that there are apparently only *some* devices with which this is compatible (i.e. "kindle fire only"). It is incompatible with my tablet, cannot be read via PC, and although it can in fact be opened on my phone, the micro text is illegible...

Really annoyed with Amazon for the lack of transparency; it's only $5 and change lost but my kids were really disappointed when we tried to read this. I suppose it's "shame on me" since this isn't the first time I've purchased a kids book on kindle only to find out that the transfer to kindle format rendered the book unreadable; getting *very* close to writing off kindle for any children's books whatsoever!

Brilliant art and story

An amusing children's book that captures the challenges and contradictions of life itself? Brilliant art and story, touch in cheek philosophy and a memorable plot and characters. I've known a dozen young children who positively adore this book, not to mention the adults who read it to them.

Hard to say what my favorite William Steig book is -- but this one ranks up there. He is funny, terse and the pictures are memorable and enchanting. Great book to read to kids, great book to read over and over. The cadence of it, the story and the images are all worthy of repetition!

Another Steig charmer

William Steig creates such charming endearing characters that they almost distract you from the sweet morals of his heartfelt stories. I think one of the all time greatest two pages of childrens picture books is here when the main character leans back into flowers and says to herself "I love everything".

Wonderfully strange, woefully presented

This is a strange little book. It's a collection of odd little victorian stories that are sometimes moral, other times eerrie. I bought this collection because it includes The New Mother- one of my favorite stories- and it is a good version. The publishers have decided to include several b&w plates of surreal artwork 'cut ups' that consist of various anatomical drawings, unnerving old dolls, and the occasional black gloved hand, dominatrix boot, or fish head. These don't really go with the stories at all- they are an obvious attempt by the publisher to needlessly enhance the creepiness factor of the book. My biggest complaint about the book is that it is rife with typos, so much so that they appear several times in each story. It is clear that either the editor was a young child or that it wasn't edited at all. This is really unfortunate because it greatly detracts from the enjoyment of the book. I am interested in the other books from this publisher- teased in the back of the book- but fear they will have similar issues.
