Members Reviews:
This is an archaeological adventure tale based on a true story that children will be fascinated by ...
Jodie had one dream and that was to be a âfamous archaeologist just like her dad.â Uncovering treasures would be way cool and even her dog, Digger, was getting in on the act. When she asked him to dig up her dadâs slippers, he came back with his hat. when she asked Digger to get Eliâs baseball, âDigger came back with her brotherâs smelly baseball socks.â Ewwww! Jodie held her nose in disgust. No way was she going to dig up great treasures with an assistant like Digger.
It was time to take Digger for a walk and her mother told her to âbe home in time for Shabbat.â It would be a good time to think about what she could get him for his birthday. Jodie and Digger were off to Porcupine Park, a park alive with dancers, bikers, runners, and other people walking dogs. The sun was begging to set and Shabbat was near, but Digger was nowhere to be found. Suddenly Jodie heard him and soon discovered him in a pit. She leaned over to reach to him, only to find herself, âtumbling, turning, somersaultingâ into a pit! What was this very mysterious pit she found herself in?
This is an archaeological adventure tale that children will be fascinated by. This tale is actually based on a true story about Tzack the pup, one that most children will be unfamiliar with. When Jodie takes Digger to the park, he actually falls into what she would later learn was a âgrape pressing area during the First Temple period.â The artwork depicts what the area looked like in the past and Jodie learns about the history from her father and another archaeologist. In the back of the book we learn more historical details about the ârealâ Tzackâs amazing archaeological find.

Dogs can help with archaeology too!
Jodie is an amateur archaeologist. She wants to become a famous archaeologist one day though, just like her dad. She thinks her dog Digger will be able to help her more fully develop into that profession, but what he comes back with after she asks him to go and fetch certain things seems like that idea is hopeless. She takes him for a walk one day and he wanders away. The place he wanders away to opens up an interesting discovery for her and eventually her father, so maybe he is not so hopeless to have around helping her after all!
This book does a great job of bringing the archeology profession more alive to children. It is advertised for children ages 5-9, which I think are usually the ages children start learning about jobs that people have, which is why I think this topic will fit for children of those age groups. I loved how it describes how people used a wine press in ancient Bible days! Even though this story was fictionalized, it was great to learn that there is truth behind it, since it is based on a true story about the first dog in history to discover a major archeological site in Israel.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful Story
I absolutely loved this book, which is much needed, as resources for Jewish children can be difficult to find.
