RISE THE DARK has all the best of Koryta!

RISE THE DARK is an example of what makes Michael Koryta one of the best. The book, the second featuring private investigator Markus Novak, builds on the foundation laid in the first Novak book, LAST WORDS, and focuses on great characters, a compelling plot with several unforeseen twists, dry humor, action, and even some romance. Beyond a traditional mystery/thriller, it also includes a little more than a touch of the paranormal, which seems to be one of Koryta's strengths: adding just enough to keep it interesting while not dominating the story.

Koryta fans will appreciate that RISE THE DARK has all the best of Koryta and the references to several of his other books. New readers will get to discover those bests in a great story that I expect will lead them to his other great books.

Rise the Dark will satisfy all your "thriller" needs!

Michael Koryta has done it again. "Rise the Dark" is a thrilling, touching and intense ride that takes the reader to multiple locations with vivid imagery and powerful characters. Koryta even throws in some humor that had me laughing out loud. All in all, this is a compelling story that is really hard to put down.

The story is a continuation of the tale of Markus Novak, but it would be easy to pick this up without having read "Last Words" (another intense read that I highly recommend). While Novak might be ready to visit the scene of his wife's murder, he goes nonetheless in hopes of finding her killer who has recently been released due to a loophole in the investigation. As soon as Novak steps foot in Cassadaga, Florida, things take a turn for the spooky. The descriptions are so vivid and intriguing that it simultaneously made me want to be there while also wanting to stay as far away as possible!

Without giving any more away, the story twists and turns and leads us on an adventure as Novak seeks out revenge amid new revelations of danger and terror. Koryta makes it all extremely realistic and I cannot wait for what he writes next! I cannot recommend this fantastic book enough!

While I like this book

While I like this book, it is the second of what is clearly intended to be a trilogy. It leaves you hanging enough to want to read the next one.

spannender Thriller

Ein Buch, das zeigt, dass es nicht darauf ankommt literweise Blut zu vergiessen um Eine Geschichte spannend zu machen. Hier wird dem Leser sehr gut gezeigt wie Polizeiarbeit funktioniert, Auch die hinter den Kulissen - die sogenannte PR.

Wenn Kinder aus Häusern verschwinden werden Sean Corrigan und sein Team auf den Fall angesetzt. Mit viel Spannung wird die Geschichte erzählt und ich war in den Bann gezogen vom ersten Kapitel an. Wer allerdings brutale Einzelheiten zu den Verbrechen und jede Menge Blut erwartet wird hier bitter enttäuscht. Glücklicherweise bleiben einem diese Einzelheiten erspart, da es sich um Verbrechen an Kindern handelt, will man da doch nichts genaueres wissen.

Fazit: Ein spannender Thriller der allen zu empfehlen ist, die Spannung mögen und nicht nur auf Splatter abfahren.

I am unable to read this book through, because the editor left in two different translations side-by-side, while also leaving out passages. It's maddening to try to read it. I gave up after two chapters. I want a refund!

By the way, this is no way reflects poorly on the author.

Witty and very entertaining - 4+

Author Antonio Manzini has a highly likable, if irascible and profane, protagonist in Deputy Police Chief Rocco Schiavone--a dedicated cop who has been exiled to the northwest provinces of Italy after a political confrontation in his home town of Rome. A woman's death by hanging puts Schiavone on a neatly constructed procedural that is full of satisfying zig-zags. Schiavone's personal life (complicated) is a big part of the story.

Regular readers of Italian crime novels might find the tone of "Adam's Rib" quite similar to the Inspector Montalbano stories of Andrea Camilleri. No accident as Antonio Manzini is an acknowledged student and admirer of Camilleri. If there's a significant difference in the two, besides writing experience and regional settings, it's in the edgier, more contemporary feel of Manzini's writing. His protagonist is not comfortable with his surroundings (Montalbano loves his Sicilian home town) and still lives with the ghost of his murdered wife which causes him no end of dating problems. While Montalbano needs plenty of good food to process professional problems, Schiavone smokes a morning joint to get through the day's tasks.

Better still, get both books and read them

What a page turner. I literally could not put it down. This is the story of an ordinary family's humdrum existence thrown into murderous chaos. The are a few references to one of Lebbon's earlier novels, The Hunt (which is another engrossing tale, but that's for another day), but nothing in The Family Man is dependent on The Hunt or any earlier work, so get this book and read it. Better still, get both books and read them.

Fantastic piece of work from an author who's at the top of his game

With "The Family Man," what could have been a tragically ordinary thriller is elevated into something far greater.

Youâve got a family whoâs sort of stuck in a rut, the dad whoâs âordinaryâ and âboring.â And then thereâs his mate who lives the enviable life, and who convinces this family man to participate in a small scale robbery. No one gets hurt, one and done, all of that jazz. Only it doesnât go to plan.

Does it ever?!?

From this point on, youâre on a runaway freight train just trying to keep from being tossed from the tracks. Some fantastic character development, (personally I think Lebbon shines when dealing with the inner turmoils of a family trying to survive), beautifully constructed twists, and great settings. This pretty much has everything youâd want from a fast-paced thriller. Including some pretty nasty meanies.

Now I had no idea this was a sequel, of sorts, to a novel called The Hunt. While there are characters and references to their pasts, not once did I feel out of place by not having the previous knowledge of whatever came before. (I am, however, planning to pick up that first novel as well). Highly recommended.

MUST READ

This was the very first time I had been introduced to Lebbon's work, in fiction, it later transpired he has written some amazing novels and Pay The Ghost was made into a film that I have seen.

The Family Man was such a captivating engrossing book.

The story is really about the trials these two young people had to endure before living their happy life, particularly Mike. The more Mike tried to protect Mary the more danger he found himself in. The more I listened the more I was drawn in.
