1 Corinthians 8:1-13

1. Mark gave the example of the Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping as a way of engaging culture. What’s the craziest thing you have seen someone do when their faith intersected with their culture?

2. When the choice arises, what do you do most often: engage the culture in order to influence them (towards Christ) or condemn the culture and wash your hands of it?

3. Re-read 1 Corinthians 8:1-13. Can you think of some relevant questions or topics that would compare with “eating meat sacrificed to idols?” What do we as believers need to be cautious of when our faith and culture intersect? How can we be sure not to assume others know and believe what we know and believe?

4. How can you see applying the guiding principles of “love over knowledge” and “love over freedom?” Think of a time when you were confronted with this choice. How did you respond?

5. What are some of the ways that we look for significance? How can this search affect the way you engage in culture, good or bad?

6. Consider the ways that your actions affect the body of Christ. What can you do to make sure that you are representing the church well? Pray for each other that this will be our posture both to this world and one another.

1. What are your expectations about your standard of life? Is there any way in which laying down one of those expectations could help you to serve God better?

2. In what specific ways are you being called to “become all things to all people” for the sake of Christ?

3. Is there a particular area of life where you need to pursue greater self-discipline and self-denial in order to “run in such a way as to get the prize”?

4. Where have you seen Sacrificial love? How has in inspired you? Why?

4. How is marriage a gospel picture? What does singleness teach us about the gospel?

5. How can SCC better honor different backgrounds and different journeys on “non-essential” issues? Are there any modern day comparisons to the circumcision issue that would map on to our culture today? What can we do, and what can YOU do, to fight for unity?

2. When you think of PRIMAL THIRST, where are you actively (or passively) looking to find meaning, purpose and satisfaction?

3. How does the statement Jesus made; “I thirst” give you greater confidence in his mercy for you?

4. Matthew 25:35 teaches us that in a sense, Jesus does still thirst. How can you serve Jesus and quench his thirst by serving others?
