Paleface is a prolific American songwriter & recording artist that performs with his partner, Puerto Rican drummer, Monica “Mo” Samalot. The high-energy & full-sound duo, is currently on tour in support of their new album Beyond the Bells, produced by Paleface, mixed by Grammy nominated enginnerJason Richmond (The Avett Brothers, John Legend), and mastered by John Greenham, who's received multiple Grammy awards, most recently with Billie Eilish.  Paleface was schooled by underground music icon Daniel Johnston, and discovered at an NYC open mic by Danny Fields (The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5), who managed him for the next eight years. Paleface has released albums for Polygram and Sire Records, and indie labels Ramseur and Shimmy Disc. He’s been called a “major musical influence” by artists including BECK and The Avett Brothers. (He has collaborated & appeared on three of The Avett’s albums, most notably as the “4th Thief” on their album Four Thieves Gone.) Additionally, Paleface is an accomplished visual artist, and his bright & bold music-inspired paintings are collected by fans worldwide.

We visit with Kat on her writing process, distractions, and what we think is some of the best advice for songwriters, being brave. 

Singer songwriter David Childers is the proverbial study in contradictions. A resident of Mount Holly (or as he calls it, "Mount Hopeless"), North Carolina he's a former highschool football player a retired attorney, and a well-read poet and painter who cites both Chaucer and Kerouac as influences. He fell in love with folk as a teen, listens to jazz and opera and fed his family by practicing law before turning in his license to concentrate on his creative passions. 

Childers has always regarded his place in the music pantheon as that of an outsider, though not at all deserved. As those involved on his album indicate, he's well regarded among tastemakers. Evidence includes playing the syndicated World Cafe and Mountain Stage radio shows (he's done the latter twice), as well as Merlefest's main stage. He has also toured Europe and hopes to again. He credits the support of Dolph Ramseur and Bob Crawford with helping him sustain his musical career--which began in college--though he didn't start recording until the 1990's.

Born in March of 1947 in central North Carolina, Jim Avett learned early the educational and entertainment value of storytelling. “I made an effort to write and remember core stories which became songs later in my life,” Jim says.

Interviewing Jim Avett was an absolute pleasure. A man who loves to tell and sing stories, his depth of knowledge about music and songwriting is invaluable. We talk about creativity, the music business, not taking things too personally, fortitude, and working hard.

While Jim’s sons, for those of you who don’t know, are Grammy-nominated artists The Avett Brothers (the “boys” to whom he refers in the interview), Jim is humble and an absolute diamond to the world of music. He believes songwriters should be true to themselves and share their stories. He says, “everyone is unique” and everyone has a story to tell.

Jim sings us his song, “The World Goes Round and Round.” And he’s right, there could be 100 songs in this one. We are so honored to have been able to talk with Jim and we hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as we enjoyed doing it.
