Big Pharma are Ripping off Americans

Big Pharma greed knows no bounds. Pharmaceutical corporations abuse their monopoly power to rip off Americans en mass. These corporations rake in ridiculous amounts of money from U.S. consumers in comparison to the money they make off all other countries, with Americans spending more per capita for prescription drugs than any other industrialized nation. The pharmaceutical industry spends billions lobbying Congress to do nothing to lower prescription drug prices, they get their way. And so, the American people continue to pay the highest drug prices in the world. Big Pharma like Pfizer, BioNTech, Moderna, and Sinovac raked in USD 90 billion in profits with COVID-19 vaccines.

Healthcare Issues and Crisis in the US

Complexity in the US Health Care System Is the Enemy of Access and Affordability. Lack of insurance coverage, high costs, and poor outcomes are well-documented problems in the US health care system, and policies to address them have been hotly debated for decades. For public programs including Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA marketplace, the complexity also extends to signing up for coverage. KFF research found the prescription drug costs to be an important health policy area of public interest and public concern.

Covid-19 and Vaccines

Acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccination becomes more critical as new variants continue to evolve and US attempts to move from pandemic response to management and control. COVID-19 stands out in the unique way it has polarized patients and generated sustained vaccine hesitancy over time. Vaccine hesitancy remains a highly documented reason for delay and/or outright refusal of the vaccine; it has become a critical building block of the landscape that constitutes our understanding of the overall pandemic and its future evolution. According to NPR, 52% of Americans have a great deal of trust in CDC, while only a mere 37% of Americans trust the FDA.

Elon and Trump

Republican presidential candidate and former President of The United States, Donald Trump sat on Monday, August 12th, for a friendly two-hour interview with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Musk's social media platform X. The interview pulled in a combined 1 billion views, according to the tech billionaire, who has now offered to host Vice President Kamala Harris for a similar X chat.

Immigration

The US border is at a breaking point. Last year, roughly 3.2 million desperate people have tried to get through illegally to the United States from Mexico. The ongoing migrant crisis is unprecedented, both in scale and the impact it has had beyond the border states to cities located deep within the country.

Abortion

The debate in the United States on a woman’s right to abortion has raged on for decades and is as divisive as ever. For conservatives, it is about religious values and the country's future as a Christian nation. For progressives and many moderates, it is about individual rights. Is there still room for compromise among the two camps on abortion and other values- and lifestyle-based issues.

Religion

Freedom of religion is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. But the role that religious beliefs should play in public life has never been more contentious. The Dangerous Union of Religion & Politics in the US along with the rise of authoritarianism and religious extremism in 2024, questions the future of American democracy.

Racism

The fact that our country is divided is not new. In many respects, it can be traced back to the founding of a nation on the promise of freedom while dependent on slavery, a time when many could not participate in the democracy being created.

Transgenderism

As transgender people have increasingly gained acceptance and visibility, conservative lawmakers have zeroed in on restricting their rights: keeping transgender children off girls’ sports teams and out of certain bathrooms, and blocking them from receiving gender-affirming medical care.

President Joe Biden at last announced that he will not seek the Democratic nomination for the 2024 election. Whether it was his decision or the Democratic Party’s is, quite frankly, irrelevant. Kamala Harris has come out swinging as the leading candidate to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee and it seems the switch to the Vice President from President Biden has been received warmly by Democratic voters. What worries a lot of people is how quickly this seems to have happened. Will any other Democrat get a chance to make their case to the American people?

For conservatives, it means they now have an actual fight on their hands, and considering how well Kamala’s debut rally from last week went down, the crucial question is how will the Republican Party, and Donald Trump react, given that Donald Trump is currently riding high, seeming to have unified the Republican Party around him.

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned amid scrutiny of security lapses related to the recent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at his Butler, Pennsylvania rally. The shooting unleashed an intense outcry for her to step down after the agency failed in its core mission. Cheatle held the position since August 2022. The announcement was made in an email Cheatle sent to staff.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses a joint meeting of Congress for the first time since Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel killed 1,200 people and resulted in the taking of hostages to Gaza, where about 100 are still believed to be held captive. Numerous reports show authorities on the scene were warned about the shooter as bystanders witnessed him crawling on top of a building with a rifle. Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to fire multiple shots at the former President before officials took him out.

Donald Trump’s opponent President Joe Biden has already condemned the violence and there are still a lot of unknowns, but a glaring condemnation of US political debate in recent years is that no one seems surprised that this could have happened.

Meanwhile, many say Trump’s defiant response to the attack will rally any 'on the fence' voters to his side.
