    • Episode 020: Resume Debates [JOB]

Should a resume be 1 page or 2 or more?

Should it have a summary at the top or not?
      How about objectives?
      Education or experience first?
How about including a "skills" section which lists all of your skills?
How about using those "power bars" to indicate your skill level?
      Should I have a 1 column format or a 2 columns?

We take a first principles approach to most of the common resume debates.

All are right and all are wrong. Each depends on your situation.

Promotions can be highly sought after. And while promotion processes might be a little unique to each company, there are common steps needed to advance in your job.

      1. Understand the administrative requirements
      2. Gain experience in "higher level work": Be more efficient with your time or stay later
      3. Build meaningful connections with your boss, your skip-level (your boss' boss) and your boss' peers (your future peers)

      5. Episode 018: Your First Days at work [JOB]

Starting a new job can be nerve wracking especially for youth that may have never previously worked in a corporate environment before.

You'll want to make sure you fit in, understand expectations as well as reflect and learn.

You can fit in but understanding office norms. When people get in, lunch time, break times, and any other conventions for the office.
You can understand expectations by having a meeting with your manager and ideally setting up 1-on-1 meetings to make sure you stay aligned.
You should also spend some time to reflect on what you've done well and what you can do better. Then make sure you plan time to do both!

      6. Episode 017: Getting a Job without a resume [JOB]

When submitting resumes online, it can be a big black hole with not feedback.

An alternative approach would be to network with folks and get to know them. Spend some time to build rapport and understand their current challenges and opportunities.

Then create a little project that showcases some of your skills and experience to solve those problems.
        Show it to them.
Maybe get some feedback from your mentors or peers first.
Then learn from the experience. And REPEAT!

While each submission may take longer than submitting your resume, the likelihood of a response and the learning will be well worth it!

      7. Episode 016: LinkedIn - Engagement and Connections [CAREER]

In our LinkedIn engagement and connections episode we go through some best practices and bad practices to avoid.

Just like in networking, the answer to any "how to network" question on LinkedIn is to "care". You just have to adapt "care" for your particular circumstances.

If you compare your current interactions on LinkedIn to a comparable situation in "dating" then you can gauge how effective you are being.

Connections are one of the most powerful features of LinkedIn, so make sure you build and leverage them. Get some insights on making the connections more meaningful throughbuilding rapport.

Then build the relationship overall over time.

      8. Episode 015: LinkedIn - Basics [CAREER]

I like to refer to LinkedIn as a "networking event that's happening 24/7/365 with several hundreds of millions of participants".

Many use the platform for job searching, and it has potential to add so much more value to your career.
Learn profile basics like what to do with your picture. Updating your tagline and summary. Putting experience so that you can be searchable. And others.

If you're not on or comfortable with LinkedIn, consider becoming more comfortable as it can be a fantastic research when used correctly.

Wouldn't it be great if they taught you the basics of how to behave in a workplace. Your work is not school, and is not your home. There are different expectations and behaviours that are appropriate.

Learn about understanding and setting expectations. How to communicate and ask questions. Making sure you manage your commitments and meet (if not exceed) them.

Consider taking initiative to set yourself for future opportunities along with "pre-writing" your resume.

      10. Episode 013: Network Audit [CAREER]

Doing a network audit starts by taking a look at who you spend the most time with. If you are indeed the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, do those 5 people have the same values, goals, and ambitions? Most importantly, do they exhibit the behaviours and habits that you need to get to those goals? Look to spend more time with the folks that are aligned with your future goals, and less time with those that don't.

Then take a look at the people that you know surrounding those goals. Are they in the industry, companies and domains that you want to get in to?

If so, then build those meaningful connections.
If not, then make those connections and look to make them meaningful.

You can be proactive about the people you know and whom you interact with.
