Those of us who are true-crime obsessed worry so much about wolves at the door, that we forget to watch out for parasites. Parasites do not like to be deprived of their supply, and they fight back in slimy ways to preserve their ability to leech off of their victims.

Both Hoover and Guy’s lives take a sharp turn in the early 50’s.  Their lives and roles both radically shifted from the saviors of the nation, putting away gangsters and murderers, toward more politically-flavored interests.  At the center of these interests lies a mid-century ideological boogeyman.  And at the center of the other changes in Guy’s life and career, his big mouth.

Post WWII, Guy’s career really took wing, becoming an instructor in addition to his regular duties as an agent. But wings sometimes fail, and not only did an air disaster completely reshape our entire family’s future, but Guy himself sometimes threw caution to the wind and flew too high, setting the stage for a spectacular fall from grace.

It’s not terribly notable that an FBI agent would be hunting down a kidnapper.  The law changed in 1932 after the Lindbergh kidnapping, and kidnapping was placed fully in the jurisdiction of the FBI.  What is very notable is that the 1936 raid wasn’t Guy’s first brush with a kidnapper.
