What is “double consciousness?” WEB Du Bois branded black consciousness as such. Not only must you be aware of how you see yourself, you must also be aware of how others see you.
Not only is this essentially the entire prelude to episode 39, “G e n e r a t i o n a l w e a l t h” but it’s interesting that while this resides in his book, “The Souls of Black Folk,” which I read, in full or in part—cannot recall, as per the syllabus in a class I took at Princeton, Du Bois embraced this dual telescope, at least in action.
As the first black PhD from a staunch competitor of my alma mater (acc to USNWR, you’re losing), he said this.
“The honor, I assure you, was Harvard’s.”
And after having attended this all black alumni conference, which before 1942, i.e. the knowing admission of the first black students and after 1746, the founding of Princeton, would have been unacceptable, probably even in imagination alone, I can say “the honor, I assure you, is Princeton’s.”
This is not black excellence.
It is excellence.
CBS, Time, Huffington Post, Rockefeller, Madame Noir, the University of Cambridge...Goldman Sachs (part two) on their dockets, yes—but overshadowed by some of the most practical and usable career and wealth-building advice I’ve ever heard.
For similar episodes, check out the sheroars episodes (from the reluctant-at-first-to-then-eagerly attended all women-conference at Princeton: the mascot is a tiger so she roars...the recordings are far less corny) and the only one from the all-everyone conference (women were only admitted as undergrads starting in the sixties while the school itself was founded in 1746 so 1969 minus 1746 is 223 years), which is ep 39.
This episode is from the all black alumni conference, beautifully titled Thrive.
And this particular recording is well-suited for those anticipating, experiencing, or having left the back-end of a career change.
Final order o' business: A transcript will become available for the hearing-disabled, those who dislike music (although it's fairly short), those who can't listen to a podcast above the screaming and running of their children, or prefer reading (can/can't relate).
