Slam The Gavel podcast welcomes James Johnson, a father from San Mateo County, California. His daughter died by suicide on July 4th, 2026. He had been alienated from his daughter and spent years battling in court for the ability to see her. He describes experiencing extreme financial and litigation abuse throughout the court process, including the removal of custody without, what he believes was "sufficient cause."
James had not seen his daughter for approximately two years until the hospital contacted him and let him know what happened on July 4th, 2026.
James then had to file an Emergency Request with the court simply to be "allowed" to see his deceased daughter and say goodbye for closure. The mother opposed his request and argued that ANY visit should be supervised and limited to 15 minutes. After going back and forth, the judge ultimately ruled, granting him a "Supervised" 30-minute visit with his deceased daughter.
Now James has had to file another motion which is set to be heard on September 2nd, 2026 at 9:00an PST before Judge Novak in Department 12, the 2nd floor. This father is requesting that her ashes have a final destination where others can go to grieve. James Johnson is asking for in-person court watchers and/or on Zoom.
