Metadata does not work. Whether I type like a bajillion words that are highly searched, or I write two half-assed sentences, our downloads remain the same. Still, I have some sick compulsion to dump time into these descriptions. Do you read them? Can you please validate me?
Anyways, we are doing an episode on the 8-Bit horror titles from Nintendo. Hell, we even throw in.a couple of Super Nintendo titles, because it's our show and we do what we want. What of it, chump?
Would you like us to do a retrospective on any other systems? Any game franchises? Any game developers? Let us know, because that would be totes rad and stuff.

This week we have a special guest host, Adam, of the soon to be released, Deep Cuts Matinee podcast. Be sure to follow Slashers for more updates as we will be happily sharing our friends' work.
Based on the game of the same name... well not exactly, because the game is also called Biohazard... oh and virtually nothing from the game makes it into the movie... Well, based on one of the titles for the game, we are reviewing Resident Evil (2002). As we have through the entire "Button Smashers" month of June, we talk not only about the film, but the underlying game franchise as well. For instance, did you know that George A. Romero directed a Japanese commercial for Biohazard 2? Of all the films we have done this month, Resident Evil's film and game franchises are the most expansive. Hell, we even talk the novelization of this film, which is completely unnecessary.
The film was written and directed by, Paul W.S. Anderson, who penned all of the films in the franchise, including: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). You may recall his name as the director of the film we reviewed in our pilot episode, Event Horizon, and last week's episode, Mortal Kombat.
The soundtrack features an interesting collaboration with Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson. Beltrami did tons of movies in this era like Scream, The Faculty, Underworld Evolution, and Mimic, but went on to work on films like Logan and A Quiet Place.
Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Hellboy, and the upcoming Monster Hunter) plays Alice. Fun fact: she later went on to become Mrs. Paul W.S. Anderson. Michelle Rodriguez of Fast and the Furious fame, is in this film. She later went on to appear in the tragically terrible Bloodrayne. Did you know she was arrested for assault the year Resident Evil came out? I did. I just forgot to mention it on the show.
Eric Mabius found his way into the film after skulking through The Crow: Salvation. Years before appearing in Alien vs. Predator, Colin Salmon, appeared in this film. You may remember him as the guy from the hallway who would fit into an ice cube tray.

Think back, many eons ago, to our pilot episode: Event Horizon. It is absolutely shocking to think that Paul W.S. Anderson directed that film and also Mortal Kombat. While he went on to do other video game adaptations like Resident Evil and Alien vs Predator, those films overlap just a little more than ninjas and possessed spaceships.
The film is obviously based on the game of the same name. Did you know the game was developed by a team of four guys in just eight months? Did you know that the game was almost called Kumate? Death Blow? Dragon Attack? Fatality?
While we focus mainly on the 1995 film, we talk about Annihilation and the recently released Scorpion's Revenge, as well as the comics, cartoons, TV shows, and even the live action stunt show.
Produced by Lawrence Kasanoff, the same dude who did Blood Diner, Class of 1999, A Gnome Named Gnorm, and the most expensive movie ever (at the time) True Lies.
The film had three albums accompany it: Mortal Kombat: Original Motion Picture Score, Mortal Kombat: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and Mortal Kombat: More Kombat. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack went platinum in just 10 days.
You all know that Jake goes crazy researching these movies, and this episode was no exception. Not only do we discuss the actors in the film but also the original actors for the game and some of their other acting works (some of which may surprise you).
Christopher Lambert, author and star of Highlander, plays Raiden/ Rayden. Robin Sou is Liu Kang and we are seriously perplexed by the fact this guy was not the ultra famous action star we hoped he would be in our pre-teen years. Linden Ashby is Johnny Cage, who does a fair job of distinguishing the character from his source material: Jean-Claude Van Damme. Bridgette Wilson played Sonya Blade, but did you know who almost played her before she broke her wrist? Well... you should prolly listen to the episode then, huh?

Get in the car, loser. We're going to Silent Hill. That's right, the town littered with horrific nurse monsters and murderous enthusiasts of Egyptian architecture inspired headwear.
I think we do a fair job of detailing the video game origins, to the Playstation game and its many easter eggs. Did you ever notice the street names referred to virtually every major horror and sci-fi author for a bajillion years from Stephen King to Ray Bradburry? We even get into unused material on the game disc that was planned, but never used.
Shot under the name "Centralia," this film was directed by Christophe Gans. You may recall that Gans also wrote and directed HP Lovecraft's Necronomicon and Brotherhood of the Wolf.
I was surprised to learn that the co-writer of Pulp Fiction, Roger Avery, wrote this film. Don't worry, this was before his prison sentence, which we get into!
All of the music in the film, aside from one song, is derived from Akira Yamaoka's original soundtrack for the game. He also did the music for the incredibly fun possum video game, Rocket Knight Adventures. Because of this, I like to pretend these games are in the same universe.
Our protagonist is Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, Man on Fire, The Crazies) as Rose Da Silva. She is on a quest to figure out the reason for her adopted daughter's sleepwalkings and ramblings about Silent Hill.
Sean Bean (007 Golden Eye, Lord of the Rings, Equilibrium) plays Christopher Da Silva. He was so good in the role, they actually added several scenes with him in it, so he could get more screen time. And before you ask, no- he does not die in this film, unlike Game of Thrones and nearly everything else.
Laurie Holden plays Cybil Bennett, and damn she is boring. The character Cybil is a playable character in the Japan-exclusive GameBoy Advance text-adventure remake of the game, Silent Hill Play Novel.
Jodelle Ferland is Alessa Gillespie, the sleepwalker who is kinda like a reincarnation of a ghost from a girl killed by religious zealots. She went on to voice the Little Sisters in the BioShock video game series.

So when we had the idea to do this movie, it was because we joked about June Doom instead of the usual June Gloom. Since recording, the world is now on fire, aside from being infected with a plague. First and foremost, all silliness and antics aside, we hope you are safe. In our own way, we love each of you and truly wish the best for you and your loved ones.
Now... onto this terrible movie! Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave).
David Callaham wrote the script, and also penned Zombieland Double Tap, the now delayed Wonder Woman 1984, and both Shang Chi and the revamped Mortal Kombat still in development. The film is very loosely based on the DOOM franchise, starring the stoic, brave, and beautiful DOOMGUY. Fun fact, did you know Doomguy was a playable character in Tony Hawk?
Also, we discuss the similarities in this movie, Overlord, and Wolfenstein. Another fun fact, they refer to William BJ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein games in DOOM: Annihilation. We briefly talk about Annihilation and the writer/ director, Tony Giglio, who also penned Soccer Dog: The Movie.
The music was by Clint Mansell and if you haven't heard his score for MOON, dude... reassess your goals.
Karl Urban, who played DND on the set of Chronicles of Riddick with Vin Diesel, plays John "Reaper" Grimm. He was also in Lord of the Rings, Dredd, and this lil' franchise called Star Trek you may have heard of. Frustratingly, his costume looks nothing like John Carmack's designs in the 1993 game.
Dwayne Johnson (credited as The Rock) plays Asher "Sarge" Mahonin. While he was offered the lead role, he chose this supporting part instead. He, like nearly everyone who's seen it, was not a tremendous fan of the film even taking a jab at it in his 2008 WWE Hall of Fame inductance speech.

The film is Hereditary, you know that delightful little family movie. Oh, whoops, wrong "D" word, I meant devastating!
After Ari Aster's ambitious student films, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons and, Munchausen, he made his feature film debut with this film. Originally conceived as a typical family drama, he added demons and kings from hell for kicks.
The film stars Toni Collette (Krampus, Knives Out). I cannot stress this enough... SHE IS THE ENTIRE MOVIE! If it was not for her gripping acting and reaction to the events of the film, truly I think the rest of it would be meaningless.
Her husband is played by Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) who is clearly struggling with his wife's descent into madness.
Their son is played by Alex Wolff, who went full method in his performance. He refused to be addressed as anything but Peter for the two months of filming and did not introduce himself to his cast mates until production was over.
Lastly, I would just lose my head if I did not mention Milly Shapiro, who plays the tragic Charlie, who has never really had an identity of her own, as she was a vessel for the demon king, Paimon.
Makeup was designed by Steve Newburn, who indicated that the *ahem* scene, was originally much gnarlier. We'll explain why and how on the show.
The music was by Colin Stetson. He's collaborated with a few bands you may have heard of, basically ALL OF THEM: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Sinéad O'Connor, The National, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, BADBADNOTGOOD, Fink, Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem, Hamid Drake, David Byrne, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, Jolie Holland, The Chemical Brothers, Shahzad Ismaily, My Brightest Diamond, Angélique Kidjo, Kevin Devine, David Gilmour, Anthony Braxton, and Beanie Burnett.

One of Jake's all time favorite movies and he completed wasted it by letting Bob from No Redeeming Qualities guest host on it... uh, I mean, yay Bob... or whatever.
In all seriousness, we would like to thank Bob for taking the time to join in on this episode and yell even more than Jake... which we legitimately did not know was possible. You can find their show at https://nrqpodcast.com/
(Re)written and directed by the late and great, Dan O'Bannon (Alien, Dark Star, Lifeforce). The film is loosely based on John Russo's novel of the same name, following his falling out with George A. Romero, with whom he worked on Night of the Living Dead.
The film features great performances by veteran character actors Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa. The film also features several actors, who were fledgling talents at the time: Thom Matthews, Miguel A. Núñez Jr., and Mark Venturini (all of whom worked on the Friday the 13th Franchise).
The illustrious, Linnea Quigley, steals the show as "Trash." Nevermind the prosthetic genitalia and the fact that she is the only zombie to cosplay as a demon, her performance is great and we will not entertain any debate otherwise.
The practical effects and puppetry on the film are the things of legend. Allan Trautman played the now infamous Tarman or Barrel Zombie. His work included Muppets Tonight, Unhappily Ever After, Greg the Bunny, and Monkeybone.
Tony Gardner, who would go on to do makeup effects for Hellboy and Zombieland, made the half zombie. He was also in the Thriller music video by Michael Jackson!

I feel like everyone talks about this film's influence on the pro wrestler, Sting, but what about The Hardy Boyz? If you vacuum sealed their cargo pants to their legs, their outfits would be the exact same. Then add the high risk activities on perilously high objects and it's the same damn thing. Well, we didn't really get into that on the episode, but I have nothing better to do than to type nonsense words hoping to get some kind of metadata to supplement our dwindling numbers.
What we do talk about is this film's similarities with such classics as Robocop, Spawn, and The Wraith. We also discuss the Lee Family Curse, which took the lives of Bruce and his son Brandon prematurely.
The film was directed by Alex Proyas, who wrote and directed Dark City. He also directed over 100 music videos.
The original comic of the same name was written by James O'Barr, as a means of coping with the loss of his fiancee. Did you know the film originally had the Skull Cowboy, just like the comic? Unfortunately, despite having a tremendous actor with Mike Berryman in the suit, and a very competent makeup and costume, Brandon Lee's tragic death on set meant they could not finalize the scenes and the character was cut.
Music was performed by Graeme Revell, who you may recall from our episode on The Thirteenth Warrior. He was the lovely chap who wrote and entire musical score, just to be replaced by Jerry Goldsmith at the last minute.
Ernie Hudson of Ghostbusters fame, plays Sgt. Albrecht, a well-meaning police officer trying to figure out what is going on as the denizens of his city are being executed in mysterious fashion. Michael Wincott, y'know that guy from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, whose voice sounds like gravel covered in cigarette ashes? He plays the main villain, Top Dollar. Tony Todd, aka The Candyman, acts as Top Dollar's right hand man, Grange. David Patrick Kelly plays T-Bird, but you will likely remember him from The Warriors... *clink clink clink* "Waaaaaaarriors, come out to playeeeeeeee!"
We do not linger on the tragedy of Brandon Lee's passing for too long. We also discuss the fact that there are no crows in the film! They are ravens. This whole movie is a sham.

In the right context, virtually anything can be scary; however, objectively, clearly, plainly, certifiably, this movie is horrifying. Remember in the new Invisible Man movie where weirdo boy punches that girl and the main chick takes the blame? That basically happens 50 times in Drop Dead Fred.
Plus the true horror. Phoebe Cates does not wear a red bikini... or any bikini for that matter. Oh, and neither does Carrie Fisher. Psssssshhh... I'd even settle for Rik Mayall in a swimsuit at this point.
Gene Siskel called it the worst film of 1991, TriStar head, Mike Medavoy described it as “a children’s movie on drugs,” and some reviewer I've never heard of said, “Drop Dead Fred gives imaginary friends everywhere a bad name; one only hopes that there is an Imaginary Friend Defamation League.”
The film was written by Anthony Fingleton and Carlos Davis. The pair have often been criticized for plagiarizing Jonathan Carroll's short story "Mr. Fiddlehead," his 1989 novel "A Child Across the Sky," and his short story collections "The Panic Hand" and "The Woman Who Married a Cloud."
The film was directed by Ate de Jong, who also directed Highway to Hell in 1991. That film features both Ben and Jerry Stiller and a performance by Gilbert Gotfried as Hitler. The fact that we did not review that movie instead is our last great April Fool's prank this year.
