  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Truly, this film is legendary. With performances by Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World's End, Hot Fuzz) and Nick Frost (Paul, Attack the Block, Into the Badlands) that have been often imitated, but never duplicated. Atop a stellar script by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim) and Pegg, there is very little to change, even from the most critical perspective. Originally, this started out as a bit in an episode of Spaced, where Pegg, Frost, and Wright worked together. There, the idea to create a full length zombie feature was conceived, with a one-page Word Document on Wright's computer.
Everything in the film seems so deliberate from the camera angles to the quick edits. We discuss Wright and Pegg's cameo in George A. Romero's Land of the Dead, which also paid tribute to Day of the Dead in its own unique way. The references and homage does not end there, with other nods to the like of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Lucio Fulci, Dawn of the Dead, and more.
The film even features a bit part for Martin Freeman, who would go on to be in The Hobbit, Captain America: Civil War, and Sherlock.

  • Alien (1979)
In space... no one can hear anything but my annoying nasally voice yelling at my wife and best friend about how much I love Alien! Written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the film was O'Bannon's reintroduction to Hollywood after living in a think-tank on the ill-fated Jodorowsky's Dune. The time abroad served invaluable, as it introduced him to H.R. Giger and his hideously sexual brooding art that would take an admittedly lacking story and turn it into a classic with the help of director, Ridley Scott.
Hot off the moderate success of The Duelists, Scott decided to leave the Napoleonic era long in the past, delving into a gritty, industrial future.  Between Giger and O'Bannon (who did set design for Dark Star and Star Wars) the film has an unmistakable aesthetic, which was captured perfectly by Scott, much to the chagrin of some of his actors. For instance, Tom Skerritt, was openly critical of Scott taking so long to set up shots, because he fell out of character.
The film stars Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. Aside from a part in Madman (which you can see was later aggrandized after the success of Alien) Weaver was predominantly a theater actor. She would go on to make more than the budget of this entire film to appear in the sequel: Aliens. She would go on to star in four installments of this series, which has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in her lifetime.
Listen as we discuss the practical effects, such as the design of the Nostromo and the Space Jockey, and the ingenuity of using real animal parts in the facehugger's eggsack. Did you know that they used condoms in making the xenomorph? Well don't worry, because Jake mentions it like 10 times throughout this episode. We also discuss some of the deleted scenes and the infamous alternate ending that was luckily scrapped.

  • Battle of the Cryptids
This is probably our most ambitious episode yet. This week, we create a bracket of 16 of North America's greatest cryptids, pitting them against each other to determine who's the best! Think Pokemon... from hell!
Our contestants: jackalope, chupacabra, mothman, manipogo, Ozark Howler, wendigo, skinwalker, thunderbird, snallygaster, Jersey Devil, hodag, sasquatch, waheela, frogmen, Beast of Busco, and the squonk.
The rules are quite simple, to advance to the next tier a monster needs a minimum of two votes from the three hosts. We do our best to give you the history and abilities of each monster.  We also plan to do a Cryptids of the World episode, so if you have recommendations, please send them to [email protected].
This week's "Hidden Track" is Deathlist with their song Your Body Falls. • Wes Craven
Looking on the bright side of the legend, Wesley Earl Craven's passing, is that we can do a comprehensive biography on the fellow for your listening pleasure. Craven was an enigmatic character to say the least. He was raised in a strict religious household and only developed a love of film in his adult life, after pursuing another career entirely.
He would go on to write and direct such films as The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Swamp Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The People Under the Stairs, and Shocker. He also directed such classics as Scream and The Serpent and the Rainbow.
We also go into detail in his constant struggle to break into mainstream media, specifically non-horror movies with films like Music of the Heart and how in doing so, he had to fire Madonna from the movie.
This week's "Hidden Track" is Dnzl with their song Fences. They are playing in Yonkers Nov, 9th @ Barney McNabs with Distance Kept, Carnage Krew, Billy Club Sandwich, and ONYX. You can find them at https://www.dnzlhxc.com/music

  • It (2017) & It: Chapter 2 (2019)
Another IT episode? That's right, two episodes dedicated to film adaptations in as many months. The legendary novel by Stephen King gets adapted much more competently in Andy Muschietti's very ambitious film series. If you are listening to this as a precursor to It: Chapter 2, fear not-- we announce when our discussion gets into spoiler territory.
2017 stars the magnanimous Bill Skarsgård as It / Pennywise, Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom, Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Uris, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon. Not only do we discuss easter eggs, nods to the books, and these actors' great performances, but we discuss the casting process for the sequel.
It: Chapter 2 stars Jessica Chastain as the adult Beverly Marsh, James McAvoy as "Big: Bill, Bill Hader as Richie "Trashmouth" Tozier, Isaiah Mustafa  as Mike Hanlon, Jay Ryan as Ben "Haystack" Hanscom, James Ransone as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Andy Bean as Stanley "Slice 'Em Open" Uris.
We discuss the film, our impressions, and where the franchise can go from here. Director, Andy Muschietti, is actively campaigning to do a supercut of both films combined, returning the deleted scenes, and even adding new ones. So yes, it is wholly possible that Slashers will do yet another episode on It... Beep beep.

  • Bad Taste (1987)
Have you ever seen a movie shot on 16mm that was supposed to be a 10 minute short film, that turned into a life-changing four year endeavor? That is this movie and the journey make's Frodo's little jaunt into Mordor look bland by comparison. Peter Jackson's debut, Bad Taste, features a cast and crew of his co-workers from his day job, who he suckered into getting together almost every Sunday for four years. You can see the brilliance that would become his Academy Award Winning style in this gorey, bizarre feature.

  • Tales from the Crypt (Comics)
Bill Gaines changed the comic industry in multiple ways, in multiple eras, it just so happens that our favorite involved schlocky gore and stolen stories. The "source material" included works from Ralph Murphy, Robert Florey, F. Marion Crawford, Arthur Machens, W.F. Harvey, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradburry, David H. Keller, and Carl Theodor Dreyer.
In the episode, we try to herald the artists of the comic, including Wally Wood, Johnny Craig, Graham Ingels, George Evans, Jack Kamen, and Joe Orlando. Truly, the art is what distinguished this series more than anything else.
We also touch on the cartoon series, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, the feature films (Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Fear), and the bizarre game show, Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House.

  • Ticks (1993)
When a group of troubled teens (played by a group of bad actors) retreat to the San Bernardino Mountains to find themselves, they also find mutated Ticks and a world of woes. The movie features Seth Green (Robot Chicken, IT, Austin Powers), Alfonso Ribiero (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), the legendary Clint Howard (Ice Cream Man, Apollo 13, The Waterboy), and his dad.
With some charming special effects and a bit of a lame duck plot, the movie is a great example of schlock. Also, Jake basically decides to recite two full documentaries on Ticks from memory.

  • Stephen King's It (1990)
As we get ready for It: Chapter 2 coming out in September, please enjoy our raucous discussion on the 1990 made for TV movie. The film very competently shrinks 1,138 pages down to a comparatively breezy 192 minute event.
Basically, the film is the Tim Curry show. His portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown is so iconic, that it nearly dwarfs his other performances such as The Darkness and Dr. Frankenfurter.
Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Fright Night Part 2), the first episode of the mini series focuses on "The Lucky Seven," rather than "The Losers Club" and their quest to defeat Pennywise. Then, in the second episode, the older (and also sterile) older version of the gang returns to Derry to finish the job.
Also, be sure to stay tuned after the show to hear the "Hidden Track" by The Lucitones: https://batcaverecords.com/the-lucitones
