There, where the path of man doth end, begins the realm of profound silence. In the darksome heart of the wildwood, amidst the mists, the great lady of wild nature was born. Ere she gained a visage and a voice, she was but the rustle of leaves and the chill of the morn. Men felt her breath when they ventured too deep into the thicket. Fear and humility brought it to pass that a mighty name was bestowed upon her at last. Devana.

In days of yore, when the oaks did rustle upon the marches of Wagria, folk whispered in dread that 'twas a realm closed unto liars. 'Twas there that Prove, the judge of the gods, did wield his might. Today, this ancient legend doth awaken anew. Ye shall come to know the tale of a feud over land betwixt the warrior Kate and the wise Mirona, who did listen unto the whispers of the earth.

THE LEGEND OF THE ASPEN AND THE HAZEL

There are ancient mysteries in this world, hidden by the whispering wildwood. When trees yet had names, the mighty goddess Mokosh did weave the fates of the earth. Side by side there grew two neighbors. The proud aspen did prize her beauty and lofty stature. The humble hazel kept close unto the earth, giving shade unto wanderers. When a stern tempest drew near, the time of trial had come.

Why doth the aspen tremble in dread, whilst the hazel is never struck by lightning? Listen well, how pride doth bring forth everlasting doom. A mother did once flee into the wilderness before a storm, clasping a defenseless babe unto her breast. The haughty tree cast the mother out, fearing for its fair leaves. Only the humble neighbor, the hazel, opened its arms, forming a living shelter. It fed the woman with nuts and rustled a lullaby.

The mighty Mokosh beheld this, and for all ages she decreed the fate of both trees. For its selfishness and pride, the aspen was punished with eternal dread. It doth tremble without end unto this day, even when the wind falls dead away. She bestowed a blessing upon the goodly hazel, that no lightning bolt should ever strike it. There be great mysteries in this world, of which young peasants have not dreamt. Ere the first men came unto the river Nysa, a hidden life did throb beneath the layer of clay. Ancient, little creatures did dwell there. Mysterious beings, that heard the growing of roots and felt the trembling of pure water. They guarded the earthly order with devotion, lest the dampness should ruin the woods.

The folk of yore by the Nysa swiftly grasped that they were not alone in the wilderness. Tools left behind did shift their place of their own accord, and the dead fire smoldered pale in the night. One time they understood why. From out the thick darkness came little, stout figures. Subterranean beings, that desired neither mortal dwellings nor gold. They demanded naught but a morsel of sustenance and holy silence. Thus was born a pact that none ever set down in writing. Whoso gave them bread in silence, his earth was lighter to dig, and his toil went briskly. Yet woe betide them who brought great clamor and pride unto these parts!

This legend of the dwarves of Gubin, enshrouded in the gloom of ages, doth bring to mind the ancient beliefs of the Slavs. And they do hide the great wisdom of our forebears. And they explain why the elders still leave crumbs of sustenance before their homesteads ere nightfall. When fear and darkness lay upon homesteads, Kresnik alone, the god of fire, bringeth salvation. With a spear he smiteth night monsters and can melt the fierce hail. This forgotten mythology of the southern Slavs concealeth eternal truths of the struggle between light and darkness. And it discovereth the mystery of why to this day the St. John's fire burneth upon the hills.

But unexpectedly the eternal night arrived, refusing to recede. From the dense gloom crawled forth the creatures of the night. These monsters drank blood and milk from the cattle, leaving the beasts without strength. The cruel serpentine demon took the shepherds' breath away in sleep, and from the black clouds struck Hala, mistress of storms and hail. The severe frost broke the crops, and rivers swelled destroying human property. The terrified people had already lost all hope.

Then did the elders kindle the holy pyre upon the highest hill. From the great fire stepped forth the defender. Mighty Kresnik, god of fire. His eyes were bright as the summer sun, and upon his brow he bore the sign of the flame. Bend then your ear to our audio drama, which revealeth these ancient deeds. When the green wilderness of Kurpie throbbed with life, the azure waves concealed great wealth. Fish were plentiful, and the people dwelt in prosperity. Yet man quickly forgetteth humility. Pride blinded the hearts of the ancient Kurpians. Then did the ancient Planetnik, the mighty ruler of clouds and weather, draw near over the woodlands. Ill-treated by the folk, he repaid them most cruelly.

Give ear then, how Planetnik, wearied by his strife with deceitful sky serpents, sought rest in the land of Kurpie. He yearned to taste the coolness beside the pure waters, yet human insolence reft him of his peace. Dost thou think that Świętopełk built Gdańsk? Legends proclaim it was otherwise, and in older times. The mystery of Gdańsk's beginnings is concealed within this ancient tale, which taketh its origin from a wondrous dream of Prince Mieszko I.

Let us journey back to the ages when the history of Poland was born, and the first Piasts united the Slavic tribes. Minstrels sang in those days of the great waters. Yet the mighty chieftain Mieszko, son of Siemomysł, alone turned his gaze unto the north. He swiftly grasped that a true empire must found its might upon the land and the salt depths of the Baltic Sea.

There, where the rivers Motława and Vistula join their currents, the prince and his retinue fell asleep upon bear skins. In the night, a prophetic dream visited the prince. A dream of a great stronghold full of riches. He beheld bellied ships and men paying for wares with a strange ore. It was no gold, but gleaming amber.

At dawn, Mieszko thrust his sword into the sand and proclaimed that the gate of his realm should arise here. Thus telleth the legend of the beginnings of the stronghold that changed our Polish history. The ancient stronghold, which was named Gyddanyzc. And Mieszko's son, the valiant Bolesław the Brave, raised a mighty fortress here, which in time they began to call the Golden City.

THE LEGEND OF THE IMP

A new song and word floweth today upon the Slavic Legends channel, spoken from the heart for you by the Storyteller Małgorzata. Journey in thy mind to ages past, unto the dark Valley of the Three Winds. There thou shalt meet the craftsman Bartholomew, who was led to ruin by his eternal putting off of deeds until the morrow. For in his cottage dwelt an imp. A spiteful creature of Slavic myths, that feedeth upon human neglect and delay.

This olden tale from ancient Slavic days layeth bare the painful truth of putting off one's toil for later. The youth of today knoweth this all too well. In times of yore, it was no different. The craftsman Bartholomew shunned his work for so long that he summoned an evil spirit. When the great storm came, the craftsman lost his roof and workshop, and the demon grew, taking on the man's own face. He brought it upon himself.

How to vanquish a monster that feedeth upon our sloth? Only a wise old man revealed the secret. Listen then to this legend of our fathers and know how to reclaim mastery over thine own fate. Suffer not the dark demons to whisper wicked counsel into thine ear.
