In the lands of Lusatia there unfolded in days of yore wondrous events. It all began a certain spring, when by night the barking of hounds ceased. Folk awoke in dread, feeling a watchful gaze from beyond the window. Swiftly the dark truth was divined. 'Twas a phantom that haunted the village.

Wherefore did little Johny strike terror into the whole village, and was he truly a son of demons? The elders say that in the Valley of Mist the sun riseth otherwise, and the river whispereth the names of those who have departed. 'Twas there the legend of the changeling was born.

The whole village murmured with tales of the Slavic demons, the mamunas, who do exchange human offspring for misshapen creatures. Dread waxed with each passing day, and olden fears and forewarnings grew louder than sound reason.

THE LEGEND OF THE WAWEL DRAGON

Beneath the olden fable of the shoemaker and the monster lurketh a darkness of which few speak today. In this episode of the Slavic Legends podcast, we shall journey unto the days when the wise ruler Grakch held sway over the folk. 'Twas in his time that a dreadful monster devoured living offerings every seven days, sending pale terror upon the whole land, from which even the fowls of the air fled.

THE LEGEND OF PATOLLO

The malevolent god Patollo knew no mercy for the Baltic folk of Pomesania. By his doing, the silvery fish in the rivers perished in silence, and the lush rushes turned into gray slime, dragging down all that dared draw near unto the shore.

Yet there arose a fisherman with a heart harder than granite, who felt no dread of the darkness. He challenged the lord of destruction and made a wager of life and death, having naught left to lose. With his courage and valor he won the favor of the gods, who bestowed their aid upon him, that he might accomplish the impossible task. And so it came to pass. A voice from the heavens proclaimed then that this land should forever belong unto the hero, and the river gleamed once more with pure silver.


Thus doth Slavic mythology conceal truths of the birth of places that to this day bear the names of their deliverers. THE LEGEND OF THE TEMPLE OF RETRA

Have ye heard of the stronghold, where nine gates of black oak guarded untold riches? This is Retra. The lost temple-city of the Slavs, whose splendor doth blind seekers of truth to this very day. The temple's heart concealed roofs of stag horns and the golden armor of the deity, striking dread and awe into the hearts of strangers. Yet when the hour of trial came and foes stood at the gates, something truly unimaginable came to pass.

Rather than yield their sacred relics to the invader's axe, priests and warriors chose eternal silence within the earth's embrace. On that one dreadful night, the entire city and its treasures sank into the mire and the black depths of the lake. Gold and the effigies of gods vanished into the deep, and in the blink of an eye, the wildwood covered all trace of the walls.

Today, Retra is the Slavic Atlantis, its secrets jealously guarded by demons of the lake. Ye shall learn from this tale wherefore the invaders could not find even the path by which they had come to the battlefield. Ye shall know the might of the Lutici oaths, the breaking of which brought a doom far worse than death itself. Hearken closely, for beneath the water's glassy surface still slumbers a power that once made the world tremble. 'Tis not merely a tale of ruin, but of a great pride that knoweth no bounds of time.
